This is so canon I’m crying I’ve done my waiting...
Thank you for saying that!
I send you 39
39. Things I wish I’d known earlier.
Everything? I was so hopelessly naive and clueless in my teens. It hurt me socially. My parents were supportive and stuff, but they didn’t encourage me to get into popular culture and more tried to keep me innocent. I think innocence is overrated.
I wish I would have known that I could have my own style and push for things I liked.
I wish I would have known how to tell that people are interested in me. Like, looking back? I could have had a super sweet and nice boyfriend in my Sophomore year.
I wish I would have known how to better pick my battles. Still learning that, actually.
As a result, I expose my kids to pop culture, encourage them to like things I don’t, because what I think about their interests doesn’t matter as long as they’re safe and affordable. I don’t choose their clothes for them. I encourage them to make friends and be friendly to everyone. And I try to teach them how to pick their battles. The 12yo and I are SO much alike, and I’m hoping that she’ll have a better adolescence than I did :)

which is why we all we ignore that that new American AU reveal, and just enjoy the new test as a funsies thing.
Yeah, when I think about the test as more of a ‘Which house personality do you have?’ thing, it becomes more palpable, but lol watching all these white people around me be like, ‘I’m a Thunderbird!!’ has been an interesting exercise in fandom, to say the least.
tbh I kind of zoned out of her American AU weirdness because it was so long, and all I really got out of it was, ‘Some white British guy who is related to a minor character in the books maybe named the houses after his favourite (Native) American animals’, and it’s like, okay, yeah, you shouldn’t erase indigenous peoples, but this is really skeevy in an imperialist sort of way.
Also, an American school having houses is weird to me? Like, I know some prep schools (and private universities?) do that, and as a Canadian who went to a private school, we had houses (but Canada is also part of the British Commonwealth, so our private schools tend to still be modeled after British ones), but I was under the impression it’s not common. So to me, it just felt like JKR didn’t really understand typical American schools and just slapped on what she did know about British ones, and yeah, the whole thing is bizarre.
