Want to attend a poorly run Simpsons trivia night hosted by a sleazy, aggressive alcoholic who misquotes the show, sexually harasses women and swears in front of children? It only costs $15 - no, money down!
It's ironic that the host dressed as the local drunk (Barney) was polite, friendly and professional whilst the host dressed as Mr Plow (a sweet business venture by Homer WHEREIN HE SAVES BARNEY'S LIFE...) was a drunken dick bag. I wondered briefly if they did it on purpose.
I feel sorry for the guy dressed as Barney, he seems to be a true fan of the Simpsons and like he had to just put up with this idiot co-host mumbling incoherently and swearing loudly (calling someone a faggot at some stage) and at one point declaring loudly that everybody should stand up and 'chug a beer' with him. A few people rose tentatively, expecting this must be a part of the game somehow, but no, the host was just getting pissed in a high school party-esque fashion of trying to impress everybody by how fast he could drink a beer. It was greeted with awkward applause from half of the room. He was treating this thing like his own personal piss-up rather than hosting an actual quiz night.
'Mr Plow' also sauntered over to our table and suggested letting my friend and I (dressed as Patty and Selma) win the costume competition if I slept with him. I said I was a lesbian and he said 'it's okay, I have a girlfriend anyway.' What a charmer! Did something crawl down your throat and die? (it didn't die)
The quiz (and I'm being charitable in calling it that) was peppered with short clips and there were about 60 questions in total, all of which were the same questions used the nights before. This is frankly lazy and unfair, given the vast amount of material The Simpsons seasons 1-10 offer alone. How can you not have different questions each night? And why not have more interactive activities, such as getting people on stage to have a quote competition, or 'who can impersonate a character'? Did it not occur to you that maybe the tickets for this thing sold out so fast because the people paying are dedicated fans of the show? It would also help if you could hear the questions clearly.
In the last round, my teams points were not added to our final score and therefore we sat at the same score we were at in the last round. Despite my friends waiting patiently till the end to say something, they were greeted with 'get the fuck out' by 'Mr Plow'. 'Barney' (who had now become Marge) was apparently friendly and genuinely trying to help, but unfortunately his reprehensible co-host was in full drunken feral mode.
I had been looking forward to this for a good two months and my friend and I worked hard on our costumes. I ended up spending 3 hours curling a wig, painting shoes, painting cigarette boxes to look like the actual Laramie cigarettes the characters smoke, and buying a stuffed toy Jubjub. I also made the necklace Selma wears out of clay! What I'm getting at is I spent more time and effort on getting a costume together than this wanker did hosting the event.
I had three other friends, who don't know each other and were on three different teams, and they all left about halfway through. They all messaged me the same sentiment about it being awful, a waste of time and too poorly executed to continue participating.
So, in closing, 'worst quiz night ever'.
Also - my friend posted a similar summary of the night on the facebook page and it was removed. Then my post was deleted so I re-posted it, it was deleted and then I was blocked from posting.
