How to tell who’s at fault for an NWSL stream failure
Is the screen black, green, or scrambled, but the scoreboard graphic is visible and/or the commentary and stadium audio are intact? It’s Vista WorldLink’s fault. They produce and transmit the raw video feed and graphics, and they have multiple points of failure (the camera, the on-site box, the pipe from the facility, the pipe to Florida, the switcher in Florida, the pipes to go90 and simplestream). If any of the first 5 fail, the audio and graphics will still probably work; go90/nwslsoccer.com keep giving you the broken stream that they’re getting from Vista WorldLink.
Are full screen graphics, like lineups and score updates, flashing black? It’s Vista WorldLink’s fault. Their graphics feeds were especially unstable today (week 5).
Do you see a “wait for the commercial break to be over” message on go90, even if it’s in the middle of the match? It’s still probably Vista WorldLink’s fault. go90 shows this message when there’s no feed from Vista.
Do you see the wrong game stream, like a Houston match playing when you selected a match where Houston isn’t playing, or the game stream switches between matches at random? It’s probably Vista WorldLink’s fault. When this has happened so far this season, Vista botched the switcher in Florida outputting to go90 and SimpleStream. This happened frequently in weeks 1 and 3.
Is the commentary muted, muffled, or blown out/too loud? This is Vista WorldLink’s fault, and happens most frequently when Mike Watt (who screams constantly) is paired with a quiet analyst. Vista WorldLink mixes the audio of studio analysts, who work out of Florida.
All of the above problems will happen even if the NWSL ditches go90 (US) and SimpleStream (nwslsoccer.com, NWSL app) and goes back to YouTube without also getting rid of Vista WorldLink.
Do you see ads on go90 in the middle of a match? It’s go90′s fault. This frequently happened in week 2.
Do you see a “the event hasn’t started yet” message on go90 in the middle of the event? This is probably go90′s fault. This appears when the go90 player loses the stream. Refreshing go90.com or restarting the go90 app usually fixes this issue in the short-term.
Does the feed on nwslsoccer.com skip or repeat itself constantly? It’s SimpleStream’s fault, specifically their player’s overzealous automatic quality switching. Change the stream quality (the gear icon at bottom right) to something other than “Automatic” to resolve this.
Does the nwslsoccer.com media player say to go to the go90 app, but you can’t use the go90 app because you’re not in the US? The website thinks you’re in the US. This might be because of a VPN (especially if you use Opera or other browsers with built-in VPNs), or because of your ISP if you’re near the US border, or a fault of the website. The easiest workaround is to use a VPN that lets you select an endpoint outside of the US.
Does the nwslsoccer.com media player say the event hasn’t started yet? This is probably a Vista WorldLink issue. The SimpleStream player shows this when there’s no feed from Vista.
