Gender in Film
I appreciated Simon Cade’s opinions in his last video. He made educated, fair, and kind points. I would also like to thank him for making such a well researched and thought out video.
What I would like to add on to the conversation however, is that female filmmakers are often inspired by males.
I feel that in the mist of the discussion regarding gender in film, this is often misunderstood. I, for example, was inspired by Stanley Kubrick and consider the Nolan brothers my heroes. It is not that females do not find males inspiring. You can envy someone and want their job, but that is far different than knowing you can be like that person.
Frankly, I want to be Kubrick. Can I see myself as him? Of course not. Honestly, that dream doesn’t even feel reasonable. We’re nothing alike. That is why having role models like yourself is so important. They help you see that you can be like them, without having to change. This in itself should be a case for diversity in all fields.
