10:07 AM: At last a ray of hope! The mediator, a strict looking man with angry red hair, had just begun outlining the complaints, when Lamia burst in, falling through the door way in her haste. Scrambling, she explained that an emergency call had come down from the royal wing of the castle: The Great Demon Lord himself was gravely ill. I did not so much run from the meeting, and the stern mediator, as I hurried to my patient as quickly as I could, sending Lamia for the Overlord’s history chart, while I collected my medical bag from my office. 10:57 AM: A little tense, I returned to the ward, directing Lamia to wash up. The Overlord’s great emergency had turned out to be a mild hang-over; easily cured, but with Lamia’s inexperience it had taken almost an hour to resolve. This unfortunately meant that I missed the remainder of my harassment mediation, but Lamia was my student, and her education was important for the future.   12 Noon: Of the ten Pillar Barons, only two had arrived for their scheduled fitness check: Laymia, more to visit Lamia, than out of concern for her health; and Naga, who was always punctual, in the hopes of discovering a growth spurt had begun. I picked at my noon meal: swamp dragon egg, seasoned with ground eye of newt. Usually a favourite of mine, but the frustration of the time wasted by the Pillar Squad had killed my appetite. Their check ups had been scheduled two months in advance, and while it meant my staff had less to do today, it meant more to catch up on later, rather than treating the sick. Already Lillete was trying to arrange a new time, taking her away from the ward she managed, so I could focus on my patients. I was about to give up entirely on my food when another emergency call comes from the Great Demon Lord’s suite. As busy as the staff already were caring for the sick and injured, they moved faster at the call; I did not often concern myself with the politics of the court, and the wars between factions, but I felt pride that my staff at least always did as needed. 1 PM: I find myself longing for the false alarms that the Overlord’s emergencies so often are. I walk through a field that had been torn apart, and an army left twisted and broken. If I were romantic, I would expect the skies to be dark and stormy, but instead the midday sun shines bright and cruel on the field, beaming down on the unnaturally bent bodies. Lamia darts from patient to patient, frantically applying healing mumus; I could have told her it was pointless, but just as with curing the Overlord’s hangover, she needs to learn to differentiate between those who needed help, and those who do not. The battle ground was littered with those who suffered, but would heal soon enough without interference. I approached the small group at the centre of the field; seated on rocks beneath a large singing-vine tree, escaping the sun, was an odd mix of humans and demons. As I drew closer, a disheveled young man waved to me, two green-haired infants cling to his back; I have to assume they have had a part in the carnage I have just walked through. At Oga Tatsumi’s side sit two others; the demon nursemaid, Hildagarde, fiercely beautiful, but whose breasts distracted too much from her fine ass; and Furuichi Takayuki, a budding pervert and contractor, with whom I had developed a kinship. These three were becoming renowned throughout the demon world as a powerful force, and though I liked them, and served the little Lord Beelzebub’s father, I was reluctant to be drawn into whatever battles had drawn them so far into the demon world. The vicious blooms of the singing-vine screamed above my head as I listened to their request. 5:30 PM: The little Lady Nico’s rash salve had taken me a long time to formulate, even riding Oga Tatsumi’s dragon to source the ingredients, three of which were only found beyond Vlad’s Haunt. As I demonstrated to the caretakers how to correctly apply the salve to the infant’s affected areas, I reflected on the power already developing within the small princess; her cries had caused the violent earthquakes which had ripped up the land, and caused the injuries I had seen on the field. All because of a nappy rash.   I packaged up the remaining salve for the contractor to take back to the human world, then joined Lamia on the balcony to wave them off. I quickly returned to my ward, which I had barely seen all day. Lillete and the nursing staff were just completing their rounds as I entered. I circulated, adding my own notes and assessments to the patients’ charts - no more had died, and only one was less improved than expected. I considered that to be my failing, and the recoveries to the credit of the nursing staff. I gave instructions to the newly arrived night staff, and administered the medicines myself, before heading up the stairs that led back to my home, far slower than I had descended that morning. I was barrelled into by a heavy ball of blue scales and lashing tails, the creature’s trifurcated tongue tasting the air around my face as its thick fore-claw anchored itself to me. I manoeuvred through the doorway, and into a padded chair, collapsing under the weight of my pet and the day. The creature curled up on my lap, snorting with pleasure, quickly falling asleep. I sat pinned, too tired to move anyway. 6 AM: I awoke in the same chair I had fallen asleep in, hungry growls in my ear waking me.
