2013.20-21: Tate Modern

The women are discussing the advantages they have now in terms of time.

Discussing pressures of balancing work and family. One women is talking about her experience as the first person in her work place to take maternity leave - and that people didn't understand that she was coming back. 

"I have to work for myself."

A woman is noting a conversation she had with another women in 1975, who thought she should be at home making cakes whilst her son was at school - and not at work.

Another is describing another woman's shock that she'd leave her husband and son at home - though they are both adults - to do an exhibition abroad.

Are modern men more understanding of women wanting to work? Better but still unequal - hard to find the jobs. Love children and do want to be with them.

"I'd seen my mother be very frustrated that she couldn't work full time. She was a maths teacher and was frustrated that my father thought she should spend more time at home looking after him."

One women got kettled on the recent student protests! shocked by police brutality. thinks the police were kinder in 1975. "i was absolutely shocked by their (the police) behaviour" 

"the trouble wasn't being caused by the students" 

I'm very involved with the student movement so it means alot to hear her support!

"if theres one thing to pass on to the next generation its that you can make it happen and it is possible."

Woman is explaining that her 80 year old mother wrote to plymouth council to say that she couldn't walk around the sea front when they removed the seats - the council took notice, wrote a lovely letter back, and reinstalled the seats.
