You know what? No, this isn't just staying in my head. The Sonic 06 power couple was about a three words away from being Silver and Elise, and I wanna see it.
Hear me out: instead of telling Silver to kill Sonic, Mephiles tells him to keep Elise safe from both Sonic and Eggman, because they were the primary causes of Iblis' release, and to make her cry somehow. Because Elise knows him from when she was younger, she trusts him more. Silver, being the altruist he us, ends up interpreting "make the princess cry" as "make her feel safe enough to release her emotions and cry in the process", and when he does eventually go into the past, only helps the dick of soleanna seal Iblis inside Elise either to keep her alive and prevent a paradox or for a different reason created by the series of events that leads to him going to the past anyway (it could very well be the same as in canon and he just helps because he knows he has to keep Elise's memory intact). Thus not only does the key relationship develop between Elise and Silver, but things likely take a much happier course of events (although I haven't totally timelined everything, so I can't be sure).
