The medical tests she had submitted to at Fury’s request at the Strategic Scientific Reserve no longer felt benign and routine. She was still wearing the paper thin gown from the exam. Coulson had been so proud of his pet project, so certain that she would see how much this would help. The words had been lost on her, Alzheimer’s had come up, so had rapid tissue regeneration. She had splayed her fingers against the glass, concentrating so as not to shatter it with a misplaced photon pulse, concentrating so as not to put a hole through Coulson’s chest with a photon pulse, she wasn’t even aware of him stepping out of the room.
She hadn’t been able to move, hadn’t been able to drag her eyes away from the sight of the decaying and dismembered blue body in front of her. Voices floated down the hall, hot and angry cursing interspersed with Coulson’s smooth placating words. Suddenly there was the dull thud of contact, the subtle crunch of nasal cartilage, and the thump of a body colliding with the ground She needed to move, she needed to leave.
“C’mon.” She jolted hard at the hand slipping into hers, but Clint didn’t even flinch at the pulse of energy that he must have felt. “You don’t want to be here right now.”
He called Laura while Carol was changing, “Hey babe, I picked up a stray, I’m going to bring her home for the night.”
