The current cover uses orange (between red and yellow) and has a handless sunburst clock - a symbol of hope in the face of unknown, impending doom. It poses the question of what weāll do with our finite time, and who weāll become. It offers an opportunity for redemption.
Hey everyone! Yes, itās me again. Iāve started a Fallout 4 fic that Iāve been wanting to write for a few years now. Itās a Fallout 4 prequel set in Pre-War Sanctuary Hills, starring a non-straight Nora whoās discovering and coming to terms with her sexuality while married to Nate. It has a subplot too, revolving around her career as an attorney.Ā

Summary:Ā In September of 2075, Nate and Nora move to serene Sanctuary Hills a month before Nate has to ship out on another tour. The neighborhood is not without its quirks, but itās become home. Just when she thinks her suburban idyll realized, Nora meets hotshot Corvega advertiser Barbara Voss, and suddenly life isnāt so simple anymore.
Some Chapter Summaries
Chapter 1: Nate and Nora move in and acquaint themselves with a few neighbors. Beneath its pristine veneer, Sanctuary Hills has problems just like anywhere else, and paradise is a myth.
Chapter 2:Ā Nora stumbles through meeting her next-door lesbian neighbors and canāt help but feel inexplicably off-center for hours after. Sheās invited to hang out with some of the local women to gossip and finalize plans for an annual barbecue.Ā
Chapter 3: On the day of the barbecue, Nora is introduced to Barbara and feels an immediate connection to her. Later, the two find themselves in a minor predicament.
Firebird - Declaration of Narrative Intent
So, I like doing these meta posts for a couple reasons. 1) Writing out my intent helps clarify it to myself and provides a reference I can come back to if I ever start losing my way. 2) It provides readers with a rubric to use if they ever want to help me achieve what I intended, because we all know that authorial intent doesnāt mean shit if it doesnāt show through the work.Ā
The narrative style, or voice, of Firebird is a departure from my usual. The voice is contemporary and colloquial. 50% of the editing process is dedicated to economy/streamlining, and what Iām calling naturalizing, which for me means making things sound organic and casual - something not too different from regular human speech (except logical and grammatically correct because transcribed human speech is a nightmare).Ā
The effect of this voice is an intimate connection with the protagonist (Nora). Despite the story being told in third-person POV, it is very plausible that every bit of narration is a high-fidelity reflection of Noraās thoughts and experiences. Nothing told in the story is ever outside the realm of her knowledge. There is zero omniscience, and everything Nora notices about other characters and the world is either apparent or assumed.Ā
It carries a sense of humor - dry, dark, ironic - that personalizes the story, the cultural setting, and Nora at the same time. It personalizes the world. The voice of the story, perhaps, is Noraās voice, or a disembodiment of it. However that may be, the goal is intimacy and authenticity. To be very grounded and human.

Another project Iāve left on the back burner: what i recently dug up is a desperate housewives-esque prequel to fallout 4, starring nora when she & nate move to sanctuary hills and meet all the neighbors and nora discovers/pursues gay feelings etc etc. anyway i guess i took extensive notes on the neighbors. there are some names in my notes that iām like... who the fuck is that? and i have to go digging through the wiki just to find them. damn past me, you donāt screw around when it comes to research. i sort of want to write this, though... iām so tempted...
thereās a lot of shit like this that just never gets written. honestly sometimes i feel like the trash pile is more interesting than the finished pile
I have a question re: Firebird. Nora has Shaun right so doesn't that mean things don't work out between her and Barbara in the end? T_T
Just to clarify before I say anything else, this story is not one of thoseĀ āqueer woman renounces her queer activities by the endā things. Nope, things will wrap up in a less clear-cut way, to both infiltrate canon as I like to do, and to leave Noraās sexuality a little open-ended. Is she gay? Bisexual? etc? She never figures it out and is neverĀ meant to in this story. All options are possible interpretations. And the ending is sad of course, but not because things didnāt necessarily work out with her relationship. Itās sad because Nora ran out of time trying to figure out what to do. She never stood up and took the opportunity to consolidate what she wanted. Just sort of let life go on, digging her hole deeper.
