considering their friendship and influence on each others work, I was curious on if you had any thoughts on Hidehiko Araki and his work, such as Jojo, Baoh, et cetera. It's fun to see some of the megaten homages in Jojo and Jojo in megaten, like the Ixtab concept art and Sid Davis influencing Pucci
I think fans overestimate/overstate the closeness of their relationship. Just because they did this one interview together....
Araki Hirohiko x Kaneko Kazuma interview in the September number of THRILL magazine (2001) About each other’s beginnings Araki: Shall we b
...Doesn't mean we should look at interviews like these as more than they're meant to be: promotion. Promotion for the person, their products, services, etc. This interview is from September 2001, and besides it being an unintended celebration of the two of them avoiding involvement in 9/11, at this time Araki was in the middle of Stone Ocean, and Kaneko had worked on the PS1 SMT ports. So both had something to gain from putting their names out there. Getting them together was probably just serendipity.
As for Sid Davis influencing Pucci, I think it's overstated in much much the same way.
So what's the connection here? They're both black priests? That's not exactly a rare combination. Maybe in Japan, in a literal sense. But Araki and Kaneko both are avid watchers of "overseas" movies, where they wouldn't be so rare to see. I can think of one off the top of my head: 1989's Italian horror classic The Church, where the priest is played by none other than Hugh Quarshie (aka Captain Panaka in The Phantom Menace); I highly recommend the movie to demon-loving SMT fans, it's one of my favorites. Plus the Jojo community has seemingly found the "Araki's Crib Notes" for Pucci's costume. I'm sorry, I just think fans sometimes get these fantasies in their heads that their favorite creators are all good friends and hang out all the time, based on mere shreds of evidence.
All this said, I'm a Jojo manga fan for sure. I've read all of Araki's work except for Jojolion and, subsequently, Jojolands. My favorite part by far is Steel Ball Run. I think it's the apex of Araki's coloring and panel composition, the premise is strong, Gyro is a highly entertaining deuteragonist, and the music references fit the story and art perfectly:
This song doesn't just fit the atmosphere of Blackmore arc to a T (that mellotron! it sounds like standing outside in the rain), I think it resonates with the somewhat somber tone of the entire part (I guess because it's seinen).
