earlier this year i had gastritis and i swear to you all, i never felt that bad in my life before. for TWO (2) weeks i suffered thru nausea and horrible stomach cramps at all hours of the day.
it started at work. i had late shift and i ate my dinner and a while after that i started feeling a little nauseous but i didn't think anything of it. just brushed it off and finished up my shift. at home i had the runs and at that point i thought it's probably bc my food was bad. i had salad that wasn't rly fresh anymore but i thought was still good enough.
i went to sleep and woke up in the early morning hours feeling extremely nauseous, like i never felt THIS nauseous before. no alcohol or food poisoning or stomach bug ever made me feel like this. i couldn't throw up tho but i also couldn't go back to sleep. or do anything rly so i just laid in bed and suffered for several hours. luckily i had nightshift that day (my shifts are a mess... they change every 2-3 days...) so i decided to just rest and hopefully feel better by evening. and i did. kinda. so i went to work. i didn't feel that great but i thought i would be fine, honestly! but before i even had my first break at 1 am i realized i couldn't do this. i had to rush to the toilet like 3 or 4 times bc i needed to throw up (i know, i'm stupid and should've left when it happened the first time. but i thought i'd be fine. spoiler alert: i wasn't!). so i went to my group leader, let him know i was sick and left.
at home i threw up again. several times. i tried to sleep but i felt too nauseous and my stomach was hurting and i didn't have any medicine for it. so i slept for a few hours and then got up to call my gp for an appointment. i was honestly wondering if i could even drive to the appointment bc i felt so bad. i managed tho and we figured it must be food poisoning from that salad. got a sick note for the rest of the week (like 4 days or so), was told to come back if it wasn't better by monday and got a prescription for some anti nausea meds.
i kid you not when i tell you that was the worst weekend of my life!
i did not eat anything for those few days bc i simply couldn't. i wasn't hungry anyways. all i could feel was nausea and stomach cramps. i would take the meds and they would knock me out completely for several hours. but most nights i woke up in the early morning, thinking this is it. this is how i'm going to die. alone, in my apartment. i genuinely contemplated calling an ambulance but i never did and i didn't think they could rly do anything for me at a hospital anyways; i just had to get thru this. some with some more medicine induced sleep, i got some more rest. and when i wasn't sleeping i was dreading the moments the cramps would start bc they were terrible things. they made me cry bc of how bad they were. i get horrible periods cramps (including vomiting and passing out) but even they didn't compare tho these stomach cramps. and the only painkillers i had at home were ibuprofen and i know you're not rly supposed to take them for stomach issues bc they can break down the stomach lining and we don't want that (good thing i didn't take them, it probably would've made everything even worse...).
the nausea was so bad, and made me dry-heave but i had absolutely nothing in my stomach to bring up bc i hadn't eaten in days. at some points it got so bad i had to make myself throw up for some sort of relief. but bringing up stomach acid and bile wasn't much relief.
so monday came and i went to see my gp again. she figured it wasn't simply food poisoning but gastritis, inflammation of the stomach lining, instead. she told me to come back the next day again for an ultrasound to check if there's smth more going on like gallstones or something. luckily that wasn't the case.
she also prescribed me stomach medicine i had to take every morning for a week or so and after a week of suffering i finally managed to eat some apples and soup. it took me lmost 2 weeks to recover completely. and even though all of this happened back in march, it was such a horrible experience i still remember like yesterday.
anyways, if you want to make your characters suffer, give them gastritis. it's terrible!
