They fell in love like high schoolers all over again, even though they were well into their twenties and had dated other people before.

It actually WASN'T the World Grand Prix that they first learned of each other at. Rather, it was the event that pulled them together. Before that, they'd both been very well-read on famous and aspiring racers across the globe, and had heard of each other's successes before the competition.

Miguel would have been lying if he said he wasn't excited and also ready to shit himself to get to race alongside such a respectable racer. To be fair he was nervous about everyone, but Shu is...well...Shu!!

Their first ever talk together was during the stay-in before the first race in Japan. Miguel felt very out of his element, and they were swarmed by work, but they did have a short chat just before the interviews.

Their first actual conversation together, one on one, was in the hospital, post Porto Corsa race. Miguel had noted the look of pain on Shu's face, and convinced him he didn't have to put up with it, that he could let a nurse know and have the pain minimized a lot better. It was a big step into Shu speaking up for himself.

They had a lot of awkward silence between them after the hospital thing, and kinda started drifting off again, up until the Radiator Springs Grand Prix which pulled them back in. From there, everything became strictly casual. They even swapped usernames (couldn't do phone numbers because international lines lol, but Miguel tried)

When they met up after that, it was super nerve wracking, especially for Miguel. He was sweating bullets trying to play it casual, just hanging out like...two dudes, who hung out together. He acted strangely on a few visits, constantly fidgety and sweaty. Shu saw it as anxiety over a new place, and he did his best to be hospitable to him.

While about to head home again after one of these trips, Miguel's secret finally started to, err, slip. Rather embarrassingly. He'd been making letters to send some day, and they were sappy love confessions and such, and he'd gone and stuffed them in his bag to take home. Well, one escaped. Shu knelt to pick it up, and then realized it was addressed to him. Miguel, too stunned to speak, stood helplessly as Shu started to read over the letter. Suddenly, Shu was the one going red.

He'd always felt similarly, just, he'd never let himself open up about it, he'd kept a tight lid on to keep the peace and not get his hopes up. And now? Well, I mean. He and Miguel shared a kiss before his flight, so. I daresay it went well.

After that it was giddy highschool puppy love. Lots of blushing and giggling and awkwardness and all that good stuff. Shu was a bit difficult to open up and get to relax, but significant progress was made between the two of them.
