SHRPGTASK25 - Peter’s Playlist

Sitting Quietly, Doing Nothing - 2017

1. Pop Princess- The Click Five 

“Pop princess make me smile Pop princess drive me wild”

I chose this song because honestly, I’ve loved it since I was little. Whenever I think of Payton and her personality, her attitude and the way she carries herself- this is the song I think of. I can see this as the outside view of her back home at school, how everyone else saw her when she was a Queen B and ruled the school. Also it’s about and princess and that’s 

2. Ghost- Halsey (ft. Malcolm Pitt) 

“I don't like them innocent I don't want no face fresh”

This is a very early-Palcolm song, and I picked it because she and Malcolm started out hating each other. Last year, they literally physically fought and he was a big douche and she was stubborn and a bit of a royal pain-in-the-ass herself. Alas, it was his shitty attitude and his I’m-all-that attitude that kept Payton interested, at first. Payton felt he was always having to chase him and find out how he truly feels, but before she could get a clear answer he’d slip away from her again. Most people would advise her to step away from him but alas, she can’t. Payton would always be chasing after him mentally, even if they hadn’t made it to where they are today. 

3. How Can I Not Love You - John Enriquez (ft. Jude Belinski) 

“How do I not miss you When you're gone”

Payton has gotten close with a friend who is dying, and when you live in a hospital, that is certainly bound to happen. Alas, her situation and his situation are two fitting puzzle pieces just turned the wrong direction. If circumstances were different, life would be different, and that’s something Payton constantly thinks about when it comes to Jude. Despite things being the way they are, she can’t help but care for him and consider him someone she holds close in her heart. She knows she’s going to miss him when and if he does leave her. This song makes me cry and ugh. 

4. This Is What Makes Us Girls- Lana Del Rey 

“This is what makes us girls We don't look for heaven and we put our love first”

So if it isn’t obvious, Payton seems to have a problem with feelings and crushes and getting tied up in quarrels surrounding said feelings and crushes. Her life before Serenity was all about being on top, rebelling, getting her name known and adored by all- prioritizing fun and doing whatever she wanted. Payton never knows what to put first, being as she is a young girl still discovering herself, but love and feelings and relationships just always seem to take the reigns when it comes to her decision making.

Fix You // Coldplay

“When the tears come streaming down your face When you lose something you can’t replace When you love someone but it goes to waste”

Scout has lost her brother, her best friend, her partner in crime- the only person who has ever really understood her and been there for her. His death has had such an intense impact on her, and it has molded her into the person she is now. All she can do is think about him and is swarmed in depressive, painful thoughts that cripple her emotionally and this song just captures the melody of her thoughts and represents the guidance and help she needs in her life to get through this insanely difficult time.

Somewhere Only We Know // Keane

“And if you have a minute, why don’t we go Talk about it somewhere only we know?”

Her name is a secret, and that’s mainly because the only person who ever called her it has passed on. The name is what she calls herself, it’s what her consciousness has titled her- but she refuses to let anyone know about it because it was her and her brother’s special thing. This song is to represent all the secrets she has and desperately wants to share with someone important- someone who will keep it between them. She wants someone to know about her brother and her name being Scout- but she only wants to talk about it with someone she trusts and in private.

Not About Angels // Birdy

“We know full well there’s just time So is it wrong to dance this line?”

Scout has a lot of time before she dies, or at least she thinks she does, so she knows it will be a long time until she is reunited with the only person she felt ever cared about her and truly accepted her for who she was. All Scout does is think about who she has lost, where they are, and what life is like for them- an angel. Scout tries her best not to allow her disorder to drive her thoughts, but it’s so insanely difficult when her mental disorder is so strong and her medical one causes all the pain to be emotional- due to the inability to physically “cope” with it.

Down // Jason Walker

“I know I’m gonna fall down I thought I could fly, So why did I drown?”

Scout’s depression is just an accessory to the tragedies in her life. She feels insanely unwanted by the people around her- especially her parents. as much as she tries to convince herself otherwise, she always felt as if she was the lesser-liked child. Everyone knows that if Scout hadn’t been asked to go to that college then her brother would have never offered to go with her and died. Scout is insanely down on herself, especially in her own head, and it just seems like everything in her life is coming down too heavily rest on her shoulders and drown her.

Desiigner -- Zombie Walk

        “Get out my way, get the fuck out my face… No control.”

Whew. I’m really pushing it with this one, particularly because I adore this song, and it’s only got select lyrics out of context that apply. Essentially, this is more of a song Nate would listen to, perhaps while roaming the hallways. But it’s basically about a badass, and while it’s super derogatory and terrible, I primarily listen to rap, so I couldn’t help myself. It makes him feel empowered, on top, and exempt of all restrictions.

Brand New -- Jesus Christ

        “But with nobody in your bed, the night’s hard to get through... Well, Jesus Christ I’m not scared to die, I’m a little bit scared of what comes after... I know you think that I’m someone you can trust, but I’m scared I’ll get scared and I swear I’ll try to nail you back up... I know you’re coming for the people like me.”

This song is actually something that I grew up on. Anyway! Nate was used to the calmness of being around his mother more often than not. When that was taken away, it was difficult for him to sleep. And while he’s got fears that could last for years to list out, he’s afraid of dying and not being the ‘celebrity’ he sees in his head.

The Devil Wears Prada -- Louder Than Thunder

         “What would it take for things to be quiet? I don’t think I deserve it; selflessness, find your way into my heart.”

What would it take to get the emotions and pain to stop? The damage of growing up in the community with a skank for a mother wore Nate fairly thin, so it’s difficult for him to feel like he can breathe. What Athena did while she used him will haunt him for the rest of his life, even if he never understands. Nate doesn’t feel like he can grow close to people because of what happened with her. Therefore, when people are selfless, he believes he doesn’t deserve it, and all of his emotions are constantly conflicted, contrary to what he shows on the outside.

This Wild Life -- Ripped Away

           “Was I lying right through my teeth when I said I was trustworthy? I’m turning into everything I hate. I can’t be anything you want me to be.”

When Nate first came to Serenity he lied a little bit, and sometimes he even lies now to protect himself. However, he knows who he is and knows that no one should trust him, which is why he’s so bad at making friends. A part of him doesn’t want to hurt anyone else, and he’s tried of having to keep people at bay before they get to close -- i.e. Laurie, David, Peter, and Emma. He’s turning into everything he hates subconsciously. In so many ways he’s like his mother -- not in the whore sense, but the controlling “I’m better than you” sense. He also knows that, he’s not going to be the son -- or daughter, that his mother really wanted, so this song is more in regards to Nate’s life experiences. His mother’s hatred and betrayal, and all of his convoluted emotions. @peterwhitmanshrp @lauriekxller @emmakeller

Crywolf -- The Hunger In Your Haunt

             “I’ve been alone in a million places and I’ve seen God in some dirty faces and All that I could think about was you.”

A song he used to listen to at the little watering hole his mother used to go prance around at night in. He’d sit at the bar with a glass of water -- and as he got older, beer -- wondering what else could happen while being in the community. He knew the only way to salvation was by being the leader of the community, which was why he was fighting so forcefully to claim it.

Hearts & Colors -- Lighthouse

            “Looking back when we were younger. Remember that the police been chased us. We  can’t turn back now.”

Before losing his friends entirely to his own stupidity, Nate saw them as the light among the community. Sure, they didn’t always get along, but what’s a little light without a bunch of darkness? He was caught by the police with them, and not too far beforehand, he’d lost the respect of all of them, while also losing respect for them in return for what they did when they turned David against him. 

Jesse Ruben -- This Is Why I Need You

         “There are too many options, far too many unknowns... Cause you make the darkness less dark.”

For my beloved Vic who writes Elana. The first night Nate met Elana he fell apart in her arms and she offered up sanctuary in her office. While he is dreadfully afraid of losing her, and also getting hurt by her, she’s by far the only person in Serenity that he trusts. And without that, he would feel pretty utterly alone. Which is why he needs her. @doctorelana

Astrid S -- Paper Thin

         “There’s no hiding now. I’m paper thin.”

This is actually for David! LOL! Or my lovely Wendy. While David is an asshole and this song is a bit more lovey-dovey, I totally ship Nathaniel x David -- Daniel. Patton knows a lot more about Nate than anyone else, and he’s the only one that really gets to see him vulnerable, besides Elana and Scott. So, while he’s not actually in love with David (yet) he’s exposed to the older boy and that’s what makes him even more nervous to be around him. @davidpatton

Echos -- Gold

       “All I feel is emptiness here... I’m terrified by their eyes when they stare. Nobody knows who I am.”

For this task, you are going to be creating a playlist for your character! Simple enough, right? What you need to do is select 5-10 songs that you feel either relate to your character or are songs your character would enjoy. You also need to include a brief explanation as to why you selected each song for that character (1-3 sentences is all we’re asking for!). We also highly encourage you to create “album artwork” or a cover for your playlist, however this is NOT mandatory! 

You can format this task post HOWEVER you’d like! Let your creativity flow with this one! We figured after all the long writing tasks we’d give you one that's simple yet effective! You will be awarded 250pts for each playlist you make. Also, you are only allowed to make ONE playlist a character! This task will be due January 30th!
