Growing up in Boston, the son of a CFO and his fling, Drew’s parents really didn’t play a roll in his life. Sure, they were both there for his eighth grade graduation and his father showed up when he got his drivers licence, but aside from big moments he was along in the world. Not that he minded all that much as he was quite the extrovert and found friends easy and quick to make. He lit up a room with his positive personality and quick wit. But what really drew a crowd was his incredible ability to recreate the rather intricate and often gruesome scenes that ran through his brain.
It wasn’t that he was a particularly violent kid, the human body just fascinated him and he often picked it apart it it’s metaphorical seams. As he grew older, he became more serious about his artwork and was well on his way to a prestigious career when his father landed himself in rehab and he had to put life on hold in order to help him recover. Unbenounced to the rest of the world, Mr. King was harboring an addiction to several different illegal substances as well as alcohol and throughout rehab Drew stayed right by his side. Of course, he wanted to help as much as possible, even if his father had never actually been there for him. He drew with his old man through the withdraw symptoms and found it helped a lot.
Once his father had completed rehab and was doing mildly well as an outpatient, Drew changed career paths and decided to work in order to help people deal with their problems through a creative outlet in addition to their medical treatments. So, he applied right then for a spot at Serenity and to his surprise, was accepted. He hopes now to perfect his techniques and get those who have fallen on bad times expressing their emotions in a way that doesn’t need words. In a way that allowed for free reign and a venting space not limited by language.

From an outsiders perspective, Evangeline Miller had a blessed upbringing. To anyone who wasn’t her, it was close to perfect - with loving parents and a beautiful home, it was a life anyone could have dreamed for, but behind closed doors, things were far from perfect. Although Evangeline’s parents loved her, they always wanted her to be the best, regardless of whether she could handle that. There was always a lot of pressure on the girl, to work harder, do better, be better. She was pushed to the limits, and while most of the time it worked in her favour, it got to a point where she couldn’t improve anymore.. so she snapped.
Perfectionism was something she picked up from a young age. She needed everything to be perfect, from her surroundings, to her work and even to her appearance and personality. She felt the need to get everyone’s approval, her parents especially, and when she couldn’t get that, she become extremely anxious, stressed, and she felt hopeless. In her eyes, her only purpose in life was to become walking perfection, to make everyone around her proud.. if she couldn’t do that, she didn’t have anything to live for. Her achievements were never enough, she always had to be more, and while this stressful state of mind was clearly not good for her, it was only about to get worse.
Just after her sixteenth birthday, Evangeline started experiencing blackouts.. she would wake up in the middle of the night and have blank spaces where important classes should have been, or she would find herself fainting at random intervals during the day. She managed to keep this a secret from her parents for almost a year, confiding in a close friend to help her keep track of her school work, but very quickly her condition got worse, and it got out of hand. With the stress of her final year, Evangeline started blacking out more frequently, sometimes for a few days at a time. Because of this, her grades started slipping, and there were questions asked by her parents that she just didn’t have an answer for. Like why was she late coming home from school, why did she keep missing her extra curricular lessons, where was she if she wasn’t where she was supposed to be?
At first Mr and Mrs Miller didn’t even consider something was wrong with Evangeline. They simply thought their daughter was rebelling and was out of control, until they witnessed one of her blackouts themselves. It was during dinner in the middle of conversation when the young girl stopped talking mid sentence. She was staring straight ahead with a glazed look in her eye and no matter how much they tried to talk to her and get her to respond she just didn’t, then in less than a minute, her body slumped against the table before she fell to the floor, completely out of it. The worried parents called the paramedics immediately. It took almost five minutes for Evangeline to wake, and when she did she was completely disorientated and distressed beyond belief. Nonetheless, she was still taken to hospital where her doctor and a team of nurses monitored Evangeline for a whole six days while they tried to figure out what was wrong. In that time, the stress of knowing she had something wrong caused another three blackouts, all the same as the first. Her secret was out, and with further testing, the doctors came to a conclusion. Just two days after her seventeenth birthday, Evangeline Miller was diagnosed with fainting spells caused by stress and anxiety.
In an ideal world, Mr and Mrs Miller would keep their daughter at home to help her through this, but instead, they started searching for the best place to send her. They couldn’t deal with the fact that their daughter had imperfections, so they decided it was best to send her away, and out of all the places they found, Serenity House seemed like the best place for her.

Fiddling with the bottom of her skirt, Evangeline fought the urge to look around for her parents. She knew they weren’t here.. she was here alone, it was yet another challenge they were throwing at her, this time without realising it. “Yeah- I mean.. yes..” she said slowly, correcting herself to try sound as professional as possible. “I’m here because I’ve been diagnosed with fainting spells that are the result of anxiety, stress.. exhaustion I guess..” she replied as though she was reading straight out of a text book. She stared at the person in front of her, blue eyes taking in their expression before she glanced down. “I have blackouts.. and I forget things all the time.. there are hours.. days even, where I have no idea what I’ve done or where the time has gone..”
How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?
“I feel.. like a disappointment.” she answered with a small shrug, her nails subconsciously digging into the palms of her hands. “I doubt I’m going to get accepted into college after this.. if I can still go to college that is. Everything my parents and I worked for is gone.. they think I’ll get better but I- I know I won’t.” she admitted quietly. “You can’t really recover when it gets so bad you end up in a place like this.”
What is your biggest fear coming to the House?
Taking a deep breath, Evangeline gnawed on her lower lip as she thought of her answer. “Not getting better.” she said quietly. “I have my future planned out, I know what I need to do to get there, and this isn’t it. None of this is it.. I’m scared of letting my parents down. I’m scared of being stuck here with some awful..” she cut herself off, closing her eyes briefly as she composed herself. “I need to get better.”
How do you feel about the patients on other wards? (Medical or Rescued Wards)
“Fine I guess? I haven’t really thought about it too much. I guess a lot of them are in a similar position I am.. probably not the exact same, and I know others will have it worse… but we’re all here..” she paused again. “Like I said, I haven’t thought about it too much. I’m sure everything will be fine.. right?”

“No, I didn’t notice the severe chest pain or the six billion trips to the Hospital not to mention the eighty million tests they had to stuck me with needles for,” the boy rolled his eyes, arms crossed in front of his chest as he sat propped up in a hospital bed. A moment passed, the sound of the heart monitor the only real noise in the room as the woman,a member of the staff, looked at Chris expectantly. He sighed, resigning himself to the fact that this was apparently not the time for sarcasm and continuing with a more serious answer, “I’m here because I have Myocarditis, which is a swelling of the heart that caused permanent damage. My mom plopped me here because she doesn’t want me to die. Well, either that or she got sick and tired of me and wanted to go move to the Bahamas so she could live happily ever after without the burden of sick kids, but I’m going to go with the former because she’s a decent person. I like to give her the benefit of the doubt.”
How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?
“I mean, would I like to go back to my normal life? Yes. Do I miss my dog and the comforting warmth of standing on the heater? Of course. But, this place is interesting so I don’t mind staying here for a while. Maybe I’ll learn enough to start on my way to medical school, who knows?” Chris took a sip of the water the nurse had provided him with lunch earlier in the day, setting it back on his bedside table with a satisfying 'thunk’ before continuing.
“How do you feel about asking kids random questions all day and then being forced to record their answers? Is this what you went to school for?"
What is your biggest fear coming to the House?
"I mean, death would be pretty bad, that’s really the only thing I can think of.” Chris shrugged, getting bored of this interview, the lack of stimuli, and being bedridden with chest pains and tranquilizing medications. He was a man of action and all this lying around doing nothing was making him lose his mind.
“Oh, well that, and crazy people breaking into my room in the middle of the night and gouging my eyes out with a plastic spoon.” The boy cocked his head dramatically, setting himself the challenge of making this woman laugh, and finishing with, “But what are the chances of that in such a fine medical establishment?”
How do you feel about the patients on other wards? (Medical or Rescued Wards)
“I haven’t met 'em yet. but I bet they’re all too drugged up to make any kind of conversation.” The young boy shrugged, not really seeing a point to this interrogation other than to waste time and keep the staff from going insane from boredom. Chris thought that’d be quite funny, a hospital run by the clinically insane. He could write a book about that.
Seeing the woman finally get up, he gave her a sweet smile and a wave and she shuffled out of the room leaving him in the company of only his broken heart and the stuffed dog his Grandma had brought him because apparently he was still four in her mind. Now, if only he had his book on medieval torture.

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?
Unfortunately, yes. I sat on trial for weeks and weeks while people were constantly explaining how I deserve this, or worse. Maybe I do. I don’t know. I never know, anymore. I don’t even know what is going on with me, or not me, but Carrie. I just don’t understand why this happened to me. I got straight A’s. I played the flute in the marching band. I was in charge of the ASL club. I'm not a murderer. I don’t need medication. I don’t need to be locked up. But Carrie does. So here I am.
How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?
Of course I fucking hate it here. I hate everything about this place. Wouldn’t you? If every single god-damned thing you had ever known had been taken away from you for probably the rest of your life? Stupid fucking Lavinia thinks we should be locked up. She thinks I’m dangerous. I don’t see the point. I did drugs outside of here, I’ll do them in here. I slept around outside, I’ll sleep around inside. I killed outside, I’ll kill inside. Don’t ask me anymore stupid fucking questions, you incompetent piece of shit.
What is your biggest fear coming to the House?
I don’t know. I just don’t want Carrie to snap again. I don’t want her to surface at all. I don’t want to get in trouble, or be locked up by myself. I’ve always been claustrophobic and I’m worried that with living here, the walls are going to start caving in on me soon. I’m worried that I threw my life away and it wasn’t even me. I’m worried that everything I’ve ever worked for is gone. I’m worried that my parents will forget about me, and I’m worried that they’ll do that on purpose. I don’t think I have a biggest fear. They’re all pretty big, these days.

Why should I give a fuck? It’s not like I plan on making friends or anything. Everyone in here is all the same to me, just like the hospital before this, and school before that. You think the devil discriminates, then you’re dead fuckin’ wrong. I know what I’m here to do and it doesn’t matter who I inflict it on. Everyone here just thinks they’re so fucking special. I don’t need friends. I don't want friends. I need followers. I need worshippers. Doesn’t make a damn difference to me who they are.
