@vampostingtime hi I really like Autopilot! Itâs Incredibly Fucked Up (affectionate) and Iâve been going through every single post and fic about it. Anyways I made an AU of Autopilot AU.
A good portion of the fun of Autopilot is Owen Being Weird about the whole thing because he has a fuck ton of unprocessed trauma. And, you know. There is another character with a ton of unprocessed trauma. Who also has a (kind of) dead loved one and would undoubtedly Make Things Weird if they came back in someone elseâs body.
What if: someone gets possessed by Elle, in a similar manner as the original Autopilot. Avidâs already lost her once, they killed her, and theyâve been consumed by guilt ever since. Thereâs no way heâs letting her go again, no matter the cost. No matter who else gets hurt.
It can be Legs possessed again. I would love to see what Liar Duo would look like in that sort of situation. It would also give Owen yet another reason to be Monumentally Pissed at Avid, which is a nice bonus.
However, Liar Duo is a very different relationship to Bloodletting. If we really want to draw parallels to the original Autopilot, I would nominate Shelby to be possessed.
The thing is, Shelby would probably find it super cool at first! I imagine sheâd pick up on whatâs going on quite a bit faster than our resident skeptic doctor, as soon as she and Elle establish some line of communication (writing notes etc.) sheâd rush to tell Avid. Ghosts are real! They were right, itâs just like the books they read! And this isnât just any old ghost. Itâs the ghost of a monster hunter. This is the best moment of her life.
And, you know, they want to help! Itâs really not that big a deal to let Elle take over now and then. Sheâs super cool, and she has so many interesting stories to tell! Itâs too bad they canât write any of it down while sheâs in control, but thatâs okay, theyâre happy to just listen.
Besides, it makes Avid so happy to have his partner back. Shelby actually feels like itâs made her and Avid closer as well, now they always want to hang out with her! Well, mostly with Elle, but heâs still happy to spend time with her when sheâs not around.
Shelby, Avid, and Elle. A happy little family. One that will never fall apart, will never leave, because they need her. And you know, she wasnât really doing anything important before this anyways. They agreed to this. Theyâre okay! Everything is just fine!
For extra fun we can have regular Autopilot AU and this running at the same time.

I had the silliest idea: I call it the âOops, All Ghostsâ AU.
Many characters in VSMP have people on their backstories who a) heavily impacted their lives, and are b) dead. Off the top of my head, Owen, Cleo, Pyro, Abolish, Ren, Legs, and possibly Shelby (left ambiguous) are all in this category.
What if all of these people end up haunted.
My idea is that at first, the ghosts are only visible to the one being haunted. Probably most people dismiss it as stress-induced hallucinations or what have you. Then, someone finds a tome, reads it aloud, and suddenly every single ghost is visible to everyone.
Cleoâs mom is absolutely ripping into Scott for failing to follow the code. Shelbyâs running around introducing her dad to everyone (assuming heâs actually dead). Drift is trying to figure out what really happened between Czeslaw and Pyro, while the latter is begging someone to do an exorcism. Legsâ old squad is providing commentary that no one asked for on everything. Louis is desperately trying to control the chaos and only succeeding about a third of the time. Pearl and the Veylockes are the only ones getting anything done.
Meanwhile, the Militia go for tea in Renâs cottage and enjoy a lovely conversation with his mother.
My common-law mutual
You know, I keep forgetting I kind of have *four* mutuals and not three.
Allow me to explain.
There is a blog I follow. It is technically a sideblog, but itâs much more active than this personâs main blog. This blog does not follow me back.
This person follows me on their main blog, which doesnât post very much so I donât follow it.
The names and pfp of the sideblog and main blog are completely different.
It took weeks for me to make the connection. Someone else I follow got an ask from main blog, and side blog reblogged their answer with an explanation that theyâre the same person, and I was like âwait. hold on a minute.â
So yeah weâre basically mutuals but donât show up as mutuals on tumblr. I suppose weâre common-law mutuals!
When @mandragora-metalloidal doesnât follow you back for a month
Dude. We live in the same apartment. I have known you my whole life. Iâm good enough to get first access to all your writing but not good enough to be followed back for a month? Iâm just out here, reblogging your writing, and everyoneâs like âwhy is Shrike reblogging this random poetry blog. Oh the Masterpost says theyâre siblings, aww how sweet! Surely they must be mutuals that talk all the time!â Well we do talk all the time, in fact we started sending each other stuff on Tumblr in dms. YOU DM ME BUT YOUâRE TOO MUCH OF A COWARD TO FOLLOW ME BACK FOR A MONTH. HOW COULD YOU ABANDON ME LIKE THIS. (TOT)
At least weâre mutuals now. I *guess*.
(For everyone else reading this: this whole passage is a joke. There are no hard feelings. Also sheâs not a vsmp or phm fan so itâs not like sheâs keeping up with my posts or anything, she didnât have a reason to follow me. I just thought it was funny that she didnât bother to follow me back for ages. Finally her writing is really good and yâall should check it out!)
A very weird coincidence
so my username is ValleyShrike. Itâs the same as my AO3, which was made first.
Why ValleyShrike? One reason for each word. âValleyâ because the first thing I was planning to post was a Stardew Valley fic! (It never got posted. I lost motivation. Iâm sorry.) âShrikeâ because I like shrikes. I think theyâre cool and kinda badass. Iâm also a big fan of crows, but I decided I wanted to be named Shrike. I want to come across as cute and unassuming until I start posting angst. Mwahaha.
Anyways, as soon as I got my very first mutual (iirc I followed them first then they followed back a couple days later) they sent me an ask about my name!
So, has anyone ever heard of the poem âThe Shrikeâ by Sylvia Plath? Itâs good. Yâall should read it. Itâs where my mutual got their username from.
It is not where I got mine from. Pure coincidence. I hadnât even heard of the poem before I was asked if my username was inspired by it. Kinda wild how things lined up like that.
I got a cool poem out of it, which is nice.
Mutual (hehe) internet stalking
Iâm curious about what sort of people like my stuff. When I see that a new accountâs given me a like, Iâll often go look at their blog.
One time, I got a like from someone new while browsing Tumblr, and went to check the blog out.
To my delight, this person was posting stuff I really liked! I stated tossing out likes and grabbing a couple posts to reblog.
More notifications. I look and theyâve been liking and reblogging more of my stuff.
I kept scrolling through their posts, dredging up posts from the past to slap likes onto and display on my blog as reblogs.
More notifications. Likes and reblogs on my posts from several days before.
I decide I like this blog enough to follow them.
Now, I donât actually remember who followed who first. I donât know if I followed in response to their follow or if I made the first move. What I do remember though, is that we became mutuals within two minutes of the first person hitting the follow button.
Itâs so much fun when someone has the exact same idea as you at the exact same time.
Monikers
*ahem.*
I bestow the title of âlovely mutualâ to my very first mutual, @that-truant-heart. May we smack that blue thing with hammers together.
I bestow the title of âdear mutualâ to my second mutual, @indigodreams109. Please keep sending me those tag games, I adore them.
I bestow the title of âfuckass mutualâ to my third mutual, @mandragora-metalloidal. You should start posting Jheap soon. Do it. Doitdoitdoit.
Finally, I bestow the title of âcommon-law mutualâ to my unofficial mutual, @thesquirreloverlord / @lightblueglazedterracotta. You have excellent ideas and impeccable taste in reblogs.
May we continue to have good times together!
Follower shoutout!
Did you think Iâd forgotten about you guys? No way. Get perceived.
I am picky with who I follow! Some people who follow me have blogs that arenât to my personal taste. Though I may not follow them back, they hold a special place in my heart.
@lovelyrose20 I adore your lovesick AU! Iâve had the oneshot youâve posted in my backlog for a while and I keep meaning to look at it. Iâm taking a bit of a break from vsmp AO3 but I honestly might make an exception for it.
@i-will-eat-your-lawn I know a bit less about you but you are indeed a cutie patutie.
She is NOT as passive as the townsfolk make her out to be man⌠in episode four, she says multiple times that if the humans come to the castle/go after the vampires (not just her, any vampire, INCLUDING THE ONES ACTIVELY ATTACKING PEOPLE) then sheâll kill them. Her morals are sliding QUICK. Itâs very interesting to see.
I blame the manslaughter incident with Martynâs lantern thrash tbh. That alienated her from the town, so she stuck closer to the coven, and then Scott and Co. kept feeding her âsee, the humans will never accept you, weâre your family now. Weâre the only ones who love you as you are.â (CULT SHIT. PSA: If anyone says any variation of âIâm/weâre the only one(s) whoâll ever love youâ they are lying and trying to isolate/manipulate you.)
So yeah, the town views her as this sweet innocent victim, but in reality⌠sheâs absolutely a victim, but sheâs also an indoctrinated cult member and a potential danger to anyone who tries reaching out. And that makes things a lot more difficult.
Louis loved his parents, as most children do. They cared for him, supported him, doted on him. Gave him the gift of eternal life.
Vedette reaches for him, covered in blood, and he flinches away. He canât stop crying. He feels sick.
Louis loved his coven. They were as much family to him as his blood relatives. They taught him everything he knew, showed him the value of the gift heâd been given and how he could use it for good.Â
Heâll never forget what he saw before he ran. Blood staining the ground, humans screaming and begging for mercy as they were hunted down like animals.Â
Louis loved the people of Oakhurst. They were his chance to right his wrongs, to do what he couldnât back then. A new coven, a new family. A group of children gift him a flower crown. The baker offers him a blueberry scone, and he can taste the love even through the ash and dust. Heâs invited to weddings and funerals and everything in between. Every last one of the 2,800 people there are held close to his heart.
They look different through boiling tears and a veil of smoke. Their faces are twisted, their cheers and accusations distorted by the crackle of flames. They donât look like humans anymore. They donât look like people.
Louis loved Owen. He was captivated by the man hunching in his seat, mumbling about a mill so quietly a human wouldnât have heard. Each new visit, he opened up a little more, and Louis fell a little harder for the soul shining through the cracks, for a shy smile behind a teacup, for this brave, witty lumberjack with a powerful sense of justice. Heâd never paid much attention to the woods before, but then he was led to sunlit meadows and hidden waterfalls, the first flowers of spring and the playgrounds of bumbling fox kits. Now he looks at the forest with wonder, and heâs sure he wants eternity with Owen at his side.
He watches month, years, decades of progress undone in an instant. He sees everything he built torn to bloody pieces, and two hundred years later, he is witness to the horror and violence once again. His name used as a weapon. The fangs and claws heâd passed on tearing into an architect, a detective, a surgeon. His gift forced onto someone who doesnât want it as he begs to be spared.
Louis is not evil, far from it.
But somehow, he makes monsters of everyone he loves.

This is a post about the prevalence of M/M in fandom and why I think itâs occurring. Itâs quite long so Iâm putting in a readmore!Â
Thereâs a fairly obvious phenomenon in fandom in general, and itâs present in most (but not all! Iâll talk about this later) fandoms. You go to the main AO3 page for a fandom and look through it, and youâll usually see blue icons galore without much red or purple. For those not familiar with AO3, that means thereâs a lot of M/M shipping without much M/F or F/F. Thereâs also often not a lot of gen fics (shipping not a focus) though this does depend somewhat on fandom! (Again, Iâll talk about some exceptions later.)
I call this the Yaoi Effect.
So, why does it happen? And when does it NOT happen?
Thereâs actually two major parts to the issue. I see people talking about one or the other, but rarely both at once.
To start, letâs talk about bias towards male characters and M/M.
Iâm going to bring up one of the exception fandoms now, Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It has about 7,000 works on AO3 last I checked, and almost 4,000 of those are F/F. The next two thousand are gen fics. There is very little F/M or M/M.
I believe this can be credited to the source material. There are an abundance of well-written female characters with meaningful relationships with each other, and by my count, exactly three male characters. Madokaâs father, Madokaâs little brother, and a classmate, Kyousuke. None of them are particularly plot relevant and Kyousuke has never interacted with the other two. Thus, there simply arenât enough men for proper yaoi, and thereâs only a couple M/F options even slightly supported by text.
In a lot of media, though, the inverse is occurring.
Marvel. Not super familiar with them but Iâve watched some movies. Thereâs a lot of men and not many women.
Stand Still Stay Silent. Seven major characters. Only two women.
Six of Crows. Six major characters. Two women.
Vampires SMP. 14 people. Four women, plus Cleo (who is not a woman but Iâm including her based on fandom perception).
Jacksonâs Diary. Nine major characters. Three women.
As for nonbinary characters, well, theyâre in even worse shape. A lot of fandoms donât even have any.
Itâs statistics at this point. The fewer female characters, the less options you have for interactions between them and between female and male characters, the less likely youâll end up with an interesting or meaningful interaction, the less likely youâll get a popular M/F or F/F ship. If the few female character that ARE there are poorly characterized or neglected by the source media, the issue compounds.Â
However, I donât think thatâs the only thing at play here.
From what I recall of Percy Jackson and related series, the gender ratioâs pretty even. You have a decent number of both minor and major female characters. Of the canon relationships, most (but not all) are M/F.
Thereâs about 82 thousand works on AO3. 34k M/M. 27.5k M/F. 8.5k F/F. (And 19k gen fics.)
Under statistics alone, with equal amounts of each gender, we would expect lots of M/F, and equal amounts M/M and F/F. Taking canon ships into account, weâd expect M/F to continue to dominate, and M/M would get a boost over F/F. (I donât recall any canon relationships between two girls. Itâs been a while though and I havenât read all the new books, so I might be wrong!) Thatâs not what we see here.
We see bias towards M/M and away from M/F and F/F, even when gender ratios are equal and female characters get fair amounts of screen time and development. I think this is due to a couple things.
One, misogyny (internalized or not) leading to bias against female characters. People avoid writing and reading stories focused on female characters, gravitating to M/M over other categories as a result. (As for nonbinary characters, itâs hard to assess the presence of exorsexism in fandom when thereâs so few of them. Discrimination probably plays a role, but far and away their issue is lack of representation in source media)
Two, a preference for M/M specifically. According to a 2024 demographics survey here, there are far more women than men on AO3.  M/M tends to be more popular among women than F/F. (Apparently Spacebattles, a largely male fanfiction site, has a lot of F/F.) Thereâs a lot of different reasons why this is the case, but Iâm not focusing on the why here, just that it happens.
So. We get more M/M than M/F or F/F because a lot of fandoms are devoid of interesting female characters, because people are biased against female characters even with equal rep, and because people like M/M specifically.
Thatâs one half of the story.
Now, letâs talk about amatonormativity in fandom, and the lack of genfic.
Gender ratios shouldnât change the amount of genfic unless a fan base is deeply homophobic (and weâd see the opposite pattern if that were the case). Platonic and familial bonds are not constrained the same way as romantic or sexual relationships. However, the source material can still influence things!
To give a couple examples: Tian Guan Ci Fu is a popular BL with a very heavy focus on romance, and has a ship in the top 100 AO3 ships. Quite impressive! Thereâs about 32,000 works, of which 3,222 are gen. So about 11 percent genfic.
Project Hail Mary is also quite popular, but has basically no romance. Thereâs a couple canon relationships, but theyâre either between minor characters or entirely offscreen. The relationships that are focused on are entirely platonic in canon. It has 12,532 works, of which 4,570 are gen. Thatâs about 36 percent genfic.
Vampires SMP has 14 cast members, plus some highly relevant backstory characters. There are three backstory characters important enough to frequently and prominently feature in fics, so weâll bring the count up to 17. Thereâs a few canon ships, but theyâre mostly all offscreen. About 33% of works are genfic.
It makes sense! Someone reading romance is looking specifically for that, so theyâre a lot more likely to make ship fics. The source media also offers ships within easy reach of fans (as opposed to resorting to crackships and crossovers). Someone reading a non-romance might also do shipping, but thereâs a lot of people there for other reasons as well.
That being said.
36 percent genfic means 64 percent ship fics (here Iâm counting Other in shipping. Other tends to be a small category, so moving it wouldnât change the numbers much.). 33 percent genfic means 67 percent ship fics. Thatâs still a lot of ship fics, for pieces of media with little emphasis on romance.Â
Why are we seeing this?
One reason is probably smut writers. Someone who really wants to write smut of a character will bring in OCs or reader inserts or crossover characters or whatever necessary to make their smut. It doesnât have to make sense. Porn Without Plot is a tag for a reason. Who cares about canon. The majority of ship fics arenât smut, though, so that canât be the only driver. Itâs probably not even the main driver.
A somewhat related reason is the urge to explore every facet of a character, and some things are only unearthed in specific situations. You may require shipping to see a certain side of them. Hell, thatâs the case for my original work: the main thing has zero romance, but I actually have a short sequel planned focusing on romantic relationships, because thereâs some very interesting stuff for some characters that youâll only see when theyâre trying to date someone. So, shipping as character analysis. I actually see a lot of this in Vampires SMP!
Another reason is a tendency to assume meaningful relationships have to be romantic and/or sexual. Ex. shipping Rocky and Grace from Project Hail Mary. Rocky ends up far and away the most important person in his life (and Grace is definitely as important to Rocky as his mate Adrian), but I donât think itâs like that in canon. A friendship can be just as important as the most meaningful romance.
Finally, Iâm bringing back something from the first half of this post. Lots of women on AO3. Lots of women like yaoi. Thus, you get writers smushing male characters together like Barbie dolls.
So, we see a lot of ship fics because romances attract shippers, because shipping can uncover cool character details,  because people are biased against platonic/familial relationships, and once again, because people like M/M specifically.
In conclusion:
The Yaoi Effect is the combination of two separate phenomena: a tendency to focus on male characters over female characters, and a tendency to focus on shipping over genfic. To properly understand it, we have to look at both contributors. The degree to which we see the Yaoi Effect, and how it manifests, also varies a lot by fandom due to factors in the source material and the type of fans that are attracted to it.
A lot of the motivations for these phenomena are perfectly innocent. Thereâs nothing wrong with wanting to explore a character through shipping, or preferring a well-developed character over a shallow one⌠or specifically liking BL, as long as youâre not being creepy towards men IRL.
However, some drivers are harmful, or indicators of harmful ideas in the source media. If you dislike pretty much all female characters, thatâs bad. If you ship these characters because you donât think a friendship could be that important, thatâs bad. If you prefer male characters in your fandom because the female ones are written terribly, it sounds like thereâs a lot of misogyny in your source media. If you prefer the ships because there arenât really any good friendships in canon, it sounds like your source media is devaluing friendship and pushing the idea that romance is necessary to be happy.
If your fandom gets a lot of the Yaoi Effect and youâd like to see something else, my advice is to be the change you want to see. Write genfic! Write fic focusing on female/enby characters! Leave kudos and comments on genfic and fics focusing on female/enby characters! Youâd be surprised at the amount a nice comment can fuel a writer. A baker wonât know how much people love their carrot cake unless people tell them. And if they know people really like their carrot cakes, they might make more.
If you write/read M/M, that is perfectly fine. Do what makes you happy. This post is not a âhereâs a PROBLEM we need to FIXâ itâs a âHuh, interesting thing in fandomâ. Go bake your cakes. Yes thereâs three hundred chocolate cakes already, so what? Donât force yourself to make a strawberry cake if you donât like strawberries. (But if you think strawberries are ontologically evil, you might want to reconsider that.)
If you could pick a character from VSMP to spend a day with, who would it be?
Now, does your answer change at all if you also have to spend the day with their sire*?
*Legundo in the case of Ren or Martyn
HmâŚ
I think Iâd choose to spend the day with Shelby, because I feel like we have similar interests and that would make it easy to talk to them. Iâd probably spent the day asking questions about her fanfiction and blabbing about SBBT (my current original writing project.) I could probably also get along well with Drift! Most other people, Iâd worry about getting on their nerves, them getting on my nerves, totally embarrassing myself, or some combination. Or that theyâd try to kill me (looking at you, Owen.).
If I had to hang out with their sire too⌠erm. In that case Driftâs right out, I do NOT feel safe around that cyan bastard. Iâm afraid of Cleo (so wouldnât want to choose her or Pearl). Sausage would get on my nerves so much, and I worry that Apo would find me annoying T-T (and once again I do NOT want to be near Scott). I have nothing against Legundo or his fledgelings, but I think it would be incredibly, painfully awkward for the whole day and Iâd rather not subject us to that. If Owen is involved in any capacity I will die horribly. Avid has a high likelihood of both getting on my nerves and posing a threat to my life (pre-turning, demon bullshit: post-turning, manic murder spree) so definitely not them either.
Dealing with Pyro would be⌠I donât think heâd try anything with Shelby there and Iâm sure sheâd encourage him to try to be friendly. I might have to deal with some talk of âvampirism is a gift, vampirism is inevitable, blah blah blahâ but I could probably redirect that by asking about his thesis project. It wouldnât be super fun, but I could live with it. So, Iâd stick with Shelby, and have Pyro as a tag along.
Whatâs up yâall I am having a terrible day so you get this
I dunno. Itâs like half creative writing and half a deeply personal vent. Please proceed with caution I do NOT want to spread bad days around! If youâre not in a good mindset click away!
Oh and before I get worried Internet strangers piling into my askbox: I am not going to do anything stupid. My mental well-being does not hinge on the response I get to this. I will be fine and nobodyâs obligated to reach out to me (but Iâm happy to talk if *you* want to!). Honestly, just writing this all out made me feel a lot better already so donât worry about me too much! Iâm a big girl and I can handle my feelings by myself!
Anyways if you do want to see, itâs under the readmore.
Your years arenât being counted yet. Voices echo through skin and muscle and fluid to reach your half-formed ears. This womb is crowded, someone is kicking you through the sac. Even here, you are not alone.
You are two, or perhaps three years old? You have your mommy and daddy and your sister whoâs your best friend, and your Halmoni and Halabugi are visiting. Halabugi puts you in a toy stroller, made for dolls not people, and breaks it.
You are five years old and you have a cousin now. You get to hold him for a second but heâs really heavy so your aunt (mommyâs little sister) takes him back pretty fast.
You are seven and at Grandma and Grandpaâs house. They have cats and you like the cats but the cats run away from you because they donât like you. Youâre also allergic so you get hives if you touch them too much. They have a fire pit and you love watching it and (with supervision) putting in balled-up napkins and old newspapers to burn. Your uncle (daddyâs big brother) and your aunt (his wife) are there too.
You donât remember how old you are when you stop visiting Grandma and Grandpa and your uncle and aunt as much.
You are nine and you love love love everything cats and finally you have kittens of your own! You used to be allergic but you did desensitization and now youâre not, and the shots really hurt but it was worth it because you have cats! Theyâre so cute and fun and theyâre a perfect addition to your family.
You are eleven and eating dumplings with your sister at Halmoni and Halabugiâs house. Halmoni made them, your momâs the best cook but Halmoniâs the best at making Korean food. Theyâre delicious. You got to sleep over at their house, and they donât have much interesting stuff but you and your sister have fun anyways. You poke around the vegetable garden and make up games with the pieces of a game you donât know how to play.
You are thirteen and your friend group is breaking up. You wonât talk to them once youâre in high school and thatâs probably for the best. Thereâs no bad blood (as far as you know), itâs just not working. (Maybe itâs because youâre the youngest. Youâve always been a little more immature than the rest of them.)
You are thirteen, or maybe fourteen, and Halabugi is teaching you to fish. You have a line with two hooks and you cast it out and reel in two fish! His English isnât so good but you still find ways to connect.
You are fifteen and you have lots of new friends, and your lunch breaks are full of chatting and laughter.
You are sixteen or maybe seventeen, and your uncle (your fatherâs older brother) is teaching you how to hunt for mushrooms. Your familyâs reached out to him again, now heâs over for Thanksgiving or Christmas sometimes, or heâll visit other the times during the year. You still donât see your paternal grandparents.
You are seventeen and listening to the stories Halmoni tells you about growing up in Korea.
You are seventeen and away from home. You find friends at university and you make sure to be early to your classes but itâs still scary and you miss your parents. You come home on the weekends for a while until you get used to it. (Of course, your sisterâs there. Sheâs always there.)
You are eighteen and your cousin is thirteen and youâre a little worried about how heâs turning out. He seems spoiled, and itâs not so bad now, but if he keeps that attitude it wonât go well when heâs older. Thereâs not much that you can do. (Your aunt was always a bit of a pushover, at least thatâs what your mom says.)
You are eighteen and now your uncleâs over every Tuesday. Youâre happy to see him.
Youâre eighteen, or maybe nineteen, and your grandpa is dead. Nobody in your family is surprised, his health was pretty bad. Nobodyâs that upset either. Your dad and your uncle had a lot of resentment towards him. You have one memory of him laughing. You donât know him well enough to miss him.
You are nineteen and you donât talk to your momâs side of the family anymore. Your mom had been fighting with them for a while before that, though. You learn that she was the scapegoat of the family. You learn that the people you know are not the ones she knows. (You donât see your cousin again.)
You are nineteen and you and your father are driving two hours to go look for morels. Youâve never found any, but you like the hike and youâve found lots of dryadâs saddle there and you like the conversations you have on the drive.
You are nineteen and you donât like going back to your childhood home. The yelling and fights arenât new but itâs gotten worse lately, or maybe youâre just getting sick of it, and it happens more when youâre there so really itâs a favour for everyone if you stay away. You donât understand why your parents want to see you, well you do, but it doesnât seem worth it.
You are twenty and see Grandma again for the first time in a long time. She brings you her homemade jam. Itâs nice to see her again, and you donât remember her that well but you still care. Your family has her over for Thanksgiving that year.
You are twenty and youâve fallen out of touch with most people you met in university. You still talk to your high school friends, though.
You are twenty-one and start posting on Tumblr. At first no one notices you, but slowly more people start seeing your posts. Itâs fun! Itâs fun to see what ideas people come up with and itâs fun to take inspiration from them and post your own ideas. Nobody else you know is in these fandoms so you didnât have anyone to talk about it with before. Now you do!
You are twenty-one and your parents are splitting up. Youâre not the least bit surprised, nor are you upset. Itâs better this way.
You are twenty-one and now youâre upset. The split isnât amicable like youâd hoped. (Itâs your fatherâs fault. Itâs always been his fault, but it took you until you were sixteen to see it, until you were nineteen to admit it to yourself, and until you were twenty to say it out loud.)
You are twenty-one and you hear that one of your cats is acting weird. Heâs always been very dependent on humans and heâs struggling now that nobodyâs getting along. His brotherâs doing fine but heâs not. You wish you could comfort him somehow but youâre an hour drive away and you donât want to go to that house.
You are twenty-one and your mom calls you crying, again and again. (Thereâs two sides to every story, he says. What he forgets is that you were witness to it all. You make decisions based on what youâve seen, not what youâve been told, and your eyes donât weigh the scales in his favour.)
