Shifting Axes || Shreya & Kizzie
With the holiday break winding down, Kizzie found herself spending the last week catching up and getting a head start on her studies for the new term so she wasn’t completely overwhelmed once school got back in session. Most of her attention was put on Potions, one of a group of classes she wasn’t pulling stellar marks in. She received extra work from the professor to try and get a better understanding on the subject but it was still hard to concentrate, even on her own.
Thus it wasn’t long before she found herself in the orchestra classroom, Chelsea the cello perched against her chest as she ran through her scales over and over again until she barely had to think or look to know that her fingers were going to be in the right place to produce the right note. Once having gone through all her warmups, she muddled through the list of pieces in her mind that she could give a whirl until settling on one of the songs the group was practicing before the term ended.
She was a little surprised to see the door swinging open in the midst of a song, most people would at least wait until it was finished before coming in but then her shoulders relaxed when she saw that it was Shreya, a sixth-year Slytherin who was also in the orchestra. She silently greeted the girl with a nod of her head and kept playing, repeating a small section of music to find her dropped measure. And when Shreya came in with the piano accompaniment of the song a smile split across her face. It wasn’t the same as having the whole band together but having someone else playing with her was nice all the same. It breathed new life into her cello parts.
Her fingers expertly moved across the strings that lay by her neck as she dragged the bow back and forth near the base, drawing our rich bass tones and sweet treble notes. By the time the song ended Kizzie was practically clicking her heels in her seat. She gushed and raved about how great the piano part sounded which brought the two into a fast and easy conversation centered around music and their influences. So it came as a not-so-total surprise when Shreya invited her to the Slytherin common room for them to have a comfortable place to keep talking. That and the idea that Kizzie could see the creatures in the lake from their window sold the idea to her and the next thing she knew she and Shreya were on their way to the dungeons of the castle.
“So I’ve been playing cello for a while because of my dad mainly,” Kizzie said as she walked next to Shreya. She noted that she had to pick up her pace a tad to keep up with her long stride. “He wanted me to do some sort of activity after school and I liked the cello right away. I wanted to try the sax but I didn’t have the lung capacity for it. But yeah, I’ve been playing ever since I was...six? Maybe seven. I want to try the harp next year just for something new to do. I think i have a thing for big instruments.” She laughed a little at her own joke a moment later, just then noticing how funny what she said actually was. “I do like my classical music but I’m really into the punk-rock and pop-rock scene too. You know, like Green Day and Blink and The Offspring and Bad Religion those sorts. They really shaped my childhood. What about you? Are you more into muggle rock or wizard wrock?”
