Book 47 of 2017. Tamara Shopsin, Arbitrary Stupid Goal. A very fun memoir of growing up in New York City in the 80s and 90s, as the daughter of Kenny Shopsin of the legendary offbeat Shopsin's restaurant. I like restaurant life memoirs generally; the oddball nature of this restaurant gives this one more of a madcap family story than an insider look at a complicated business.
Recipe by Kenny Shopsin. Check out his whole pancake menu: it's massive and adorable.

Decent people…treat other human beings with respect, even people that don’t deserve it. Which is the big demarcation point I think in human behavior. If you treat people with respect who don’t deserve it, it’s a mark of high civilization. Because you never know who's only temporarily deserving of bad behavior. So you try to treat everybody with a morality that makes you a good person, not whether or not they deserve to be treated well.

I Like Killing Flies (2004)
While mac and cheese pancakes sounds like something a stoned college student would concoct at three in the morning, after watching the documentary "I Like Killing Flies" on Kenny Shopsin and his restaurant, I cannot help but be intrigued.
Shopsin has won respect and notoriety beyond his New York City establishment for just this sort of culinary creativity coupled with a no bullshit attitude--inside and out of the kitchen--that is to be admired. Watch this clip, find the documentary, laugh and be inspired.
It's been over a month since my last post, and in all honestly will probably be another one before I return with any sort of regularity. In the meantime, tell me what's your favorite oddball meal, and remember, the customer is only human and therefore not always right. Forget, and someone like Shopsin may just call you out.
