*verses for ieiri shoko //
cursed user au / evil shoko ;;
the ieiri family were a major family in the jujutsu world during the heian period, alongside the big three present in modern day jujutsu society. however, as time went on, fewer and fewer clan members wanted to be associated with jujutsu society and soon teetered off from their prominent position and were soon banished for their unwillingness to contribute to society. the clan’s coveted cursed technique was reverse cursed technique, but this was very rare. anyone who was revealed to have the technique would be overutilized by the other clans as a healer and thus also jumpstarted the ieiri clan’s unwillingness to participate within society. over the years, this resentment boiled into a hatred for jujutsu society and their willingness to sacrifice everything unquestionably. reversed curse technique is rare within even the ieiri clan but it can be inherited. because of this culture of healing, regardless if they possess the technique or not, it is common for ieiri’s to be in the medical field throughout the hundreds of years. some, however, a family member with more radical ideas and intentions get involved with experimentation, researching cursed energy and how to utilize it further. this family member would later meet kenjaku, allying to conduct experiments during the meiji era. thus, creating a family line that allied with cursed users throughout the hundreds of years to the present. [ not public knowledge ; unknown to higher ups ] - ieiri shoko is sent as a spy to jujutsu tech to get close to gojo satoru and geto suguru. - develops mixed feelings on her involvement but ultimately sees it through after the amanai incident and post-suguru’s defection reveals her alliance with curse users.
modern verse ;; [ aka out of sorcery verse ]
after med school, shoko chooses not to return to jujutsu tech. in fact, she returns to her travels abroad to practice medicine not connected to sorcery in various countries, including thailand, philippines, and indonesia. later, she returns to japan, but settles in hokkaido. there, she opens a small clinic that serves the community. from time to time, she exorcises small curses in the area, especially ones that directly affect any patients she sees. but, for the most part, puts in anonymous calls to the nearest school to take over larger scale incidents. aside from her clinic, she owns a tiny record shop. she's only open on the weekends during specific hours. she has a business partner who runs the shop and maintains it when she's unavailable.
bleach au ;;
shoko is present during the events of turn back the pendulum, being contemporaries, namely, of urahara kisuke, shihouin yoruichi, and hirako shinji. while her foremost aptitude was healing, there is an aspect of her abilities that made her suitable to assist urahara in the creation of the hogyoku. because of their close friendship and trust as well, he trusted her to assist him in conducting the necessary experiments and work to formulate and carry out the project. however, he didn't name her on any of the research and instructed her to keep her involvement under wraps. when urahara, yoruichi, tessai, and the vizards escape soul society, she remains. because she hadn't been linked to the creation of the hogyoku, she isn't among those exposed. she becomes the link between soul society and those exiled. shoko still serves under the twelfth, but often helps with the fourth when she is needed and especially during major battles.
yakuza au ;;
the ieiri family run clinic has been a front for the yakuza for decades, covertly providing their services. while they aren’t really a part of the family ranking, they are claimed and protected by a major family. their support has been indispensable and valued for their expertise and discretion. when ieiri shoko finishes medical school, she comes second in line to inherit the position as head doctor when her parents retire / are unable to run the business. though largely disinterested in the politics between the yakuza and the government, she agrees on the condition that she can still hold a position in her chosen surgical career in a major tokyo hospital. there, she would have access to a larger array of cases that interest her rather than the run of the mill gunshot wounds, amputations, and the like that filter in through the yakuza.
one piece au ;;
shoko is a part of a traveling group of doctors and scientists who travel to islands to investigate deadly diseases and epidemics. shoko’s job is to conduct autopsies on those who have succumbed to the illnesses in order to gain an understanding of the disease and catalog the research. their work involves experimental and radical surgeries, procedures and medicine. though, they do conduct more traditional treatments using proven methods. the purpose of their group is to provide aid to countries/islands that can’t pay the heavenly tribute. they work independently and refuse to answer to the world government. their identities are hidden, often seen wearing surgical masks and caps that they never remove when in public. only removing them when they are amongst crew members. the only individuals whose identities are known are the head doctors. (shoko is not one of these).
reversed curse technique expansion //
shoko's canon / existing cursed technique is unique in the sense that not only is she able to convert cursed energy into positive energy and heal herself, but she's able to convert this into output that heals others. it's said to be a rare technique within the jujutsu world of sorcery.
to further implement that, i always think it's interesting when a character has an expansion to an ability that comes with a cost or even a detriment to the self. ( also i love the idea that healers are also some of the most powerful people since they often get shunted if they're not combatants. this isn't precisely the case with shoko as she is valued and highly important in-world, but i think this gives her more a specific conflict. )
so, getting into it --- it's mentioned that shoko's ability is powerful enough to restore limbs and bring someone back from the brink of death.
as a step up from that ability, my portrayal of shoko will also be capable of bringing someone back from the dead. however, it takes an immense amount of energy. it tires her out and it's a gradual process rather than an immediate restoration, as well as a limit. i'll do it point by point to condense the information :
capabilities of reversed curse technique: resurrection //
able to restore someone's life / resurrect them from death depending on how grievous the injury is, is how much time it would take to make a full recovery. it could start with the individual in a coma before coming to. - able to borrow / sap another's cursed energy in order to output more into the method, though that could considerably weaken the person borrowed from. so, the technique in this way becomes a two way input > output. - as a technique is also a curse used to undo / defeat another curse, by using something so invasive and powerful on another person, the user effectively binds themselves to whomever they resurrected. ( i need to explore more into this to understand for myself how i see it working, but they're tethered together now for as long as shoko lives. if she dies, the person will also die. )
possible complications + cost //
as it's a very complicated technique that takes an immense amount of energy and focus, there could be an issue with the restoration of memory, long term and short term, and even muscle memory. these could gradually return or not at all. any kind of restoration would require regular output and attention; like continuous care until the fullest recovery is made. - intense fatigue on the user, which can result in being ill and weak over an extended amount of time. which would then put a damper on the user being able to heal others should it be needed. since the resurrected individual is bound to her, if she dies, they will also gradually weaken and die as well. it's not immediate but rather something that happens over time, but they will feel the loss of her tether to them. - the user has the ability to end the other's life at any point in time by unbinding the curse. ( this is something shoko doesn't know how to do yet in the event that she does resurrect someone. ) there is no guarantee that this technique works. it's honestly a hit or miss.
limits //
the user can only resurrect one person at a time within a certain time frame. ex. shoko can't resurrect two people back to back within the same day or maybe even within the same month. again, it takes an immense amount of energy and continued output depending. she could progress to that level (which would make her op af, which i don't care i love her but yeah!), but not yet.
also depends on how long they've been dead for. again, could progress to a level where she could resurrect someone who's been dead for centuries. but, that will take a WHILE to progress to. for now, it's freshly dead or maybe within the day. beyond that is no guarantee.
*portrayal notes + canon divergences/headcanons for ieiri shoko //
guide: bolded = things anyone would know, italics = things select few would know or no one would know, requires plotting to access information.
shoko did the first half of her first year at jujutsu tech at the kyoto branch. she was then moved to the tokyo school in the second half.
she has a younger brother, shuji, whom she speaks to on the phone often. he's about seven years her junior. he is not a sorcerer.
after graduating jujutsu tech, she spends a gap year abroad to find other sorcerers who use RCT. her purpose for doing so is to better understand how it works and to broaden / enhance her skill. the information she learns, she later develops into a power up of the technique. [ will be in a different post in her tag ].
because this power up involves possibly reanimating or resurrecting the dead, it's controversial and regarded as unethical. she does indeed conduct experiments with other sorcerers while abroad and is seeking to continue her work on it. that's part of why she continues med school, to broaden her medical knowledge and applying it to her research. however, these experiments + practice slows down as she becomes jujutsu tech's doctor. it's also hard to find the time to continue covert and controversial research within the same vicinity as the higher ups who she feared would either misuse her knowledge or forbid her from continuing it.
other techniques shoko knows how to do: cursed energy reinforcement and imbuing her cursed energy into weapons. because she needs to reserve her energy for healing, she doesn't often participate in combat unless needed but she could utilize these skills when necessary.
all these fics saying that jujutsu sorcerers are inherently tragic because they'll inevitably see their friends die, but let's talk about shoko as seemingly the only jujutsu medical expert on campus. forget watching your friends die, how about knowing you'll inevitably do their autopsy. INSANE.
