Hm. Two subs, both in shock collars, connected to the same remote. Both are thus incentivised not only to keep their own good behaviour, but to enforce it on the other, too.

You'd be cute in a shock collar, you know. And I don't mean that you'd look good with one around your neck - though that's true, too.
I mean that you'd be cute squeaking and stumbling in a busy street when I casually triggered the shocker wrapped around your thigh. You'd be cute blushing deep red as I gently chastised you in front of everyone for tripping over yourself again.
I mean that you'd be cute sneaking off to the bathroom before an important work meeting to send me some pictures of you touching yourself, knowing that it would guarantee you an hour without me shocking you. Unless I really wanted to, of course.
I mean that you'd be cute trying to anticipate the position I wanted to fuck you in, just from my mood and the way I looked at you - hoping to avoid the painful jolt that would tell you you'd chosen poorly.
It's not the look of the thing that matters, after all. You're cute when you're a frightened little toy for me.
Specifically down the line with Marcie already born
Because kids do this thing where they check with their caretaker if everything is alright when they aren't sure if something is scary (and like learn about the world before they become more independent)
So I'm imagining Damien holding the baby, just out of reach outside the space Tavi can move through and so naturally Tavi gets shocked and is crying (very scary stuff)
Marcie looks at Damien for reassurance as a trustworthy caretaker and because he's smiling or laughing she smiles too (like realistically this is a stretch because of developmental psychology reasons and attachment reasons but anyway)
So imagine Damien doing things to Tavi to entertain himself and laughing at him (like making him kneel behind the line where he'd get shocked and he's mocking him and laughing at him holding the kid and because he's in such a jolly mood, like it feels like there's nothing wrong the kid joins in blissfully unaware
I think Tavi would *not* like that scenario, but he should be put in it regardless (for science reasons, not for my personal enjoyment)

Hi <3 This idea was so good I had to write it :D!!! I hope you enjoy :3c This takes place. A few years in the future lmao.
Gonna tag the taglist but I understand if the stuff with the baby ain't for ya!
CW: Uhh there's a child involved but no harm comes to her, shock collars

"Where's Marcie at?" Damien asked as he left the kitchen.
"Marcella." Tavi corrected him, irritated by the shortening of her name. "And she's in her crib, asleep." He told him, and if you wake her up I will skin you alive, he thought to himself. He'd spent all morning getting her back to sleep after a restless nice for all of them, he'd be pissed if Damien went and ruined that.
He tried to focus on washing the dishes, tried to focus on anything other than the weight of the new collar around his neck. This wasn't exactly what he had in mind when Damien told him that morning that he got him a necklace, but it also wasn't especially surprising. His focus was interrupted by Damien coming back down the stairs, he looked up in time to see him walking towards the front door, carrying a still sleeping Marcella in his arms.
"Damien!" He hissed, trying to keep his voice down but still unable to control his anger. Damien simply ignored him, he was careful when he opened the door, stepping outside and gently shutting it behind him, while Tavi hurriedly dried his hands and followed after him. Damien was carrying Marcella down the driveway, Tavi didn't understand what he was doing, in all this time he was usually so careful about letting the baby sleep, he didn't know why he would wake her up. "What are you doing?!" He snapped as he followed after him, but Damien ignored him. It set him on edge, he wanted nothing more than to snatch Marcella from his arms, panic creeping up on him.
He still didn't understand what Damien was planning when he took another step, and the collar suddenly delivered a painful shock, causing him to collapse onto the ground. When he didn't immediately move, collapsed on his hands and knees, it shocked him again, and when he desperately tried to crawl towards Damien, it quickly gave him another shock, Tavi crying in pain as he tried to reach him. Damien had turned around now, a sickening smile on his face as he approached Tavi, only to kick him hard, pushing him backwards, and finally, the pain stopped, he was gasping for air, tears streaming down his face.
"Shh, baby, you don't wanna wake Marcie up, do you?" Damien said, sounding amused.
"Why did you shock me?!" He cried, pushing himself away from him.
"I didn't, the collar did." Damien told him. "I figured you need to be able to get around the house with Marcie, so the collar means you won't need to be restrained when I go out. You can move around the house however you like now!" He said, like it was something Tavi should've been grateful for. "'Course, you can only go so far outside," He gestured to a tree nearby, "I've set up the barrier so out front, you can't go past that tree, if you do⌠well, you get it. Would be an awful shame if you tried to do that while carrying Marcie."
"Take it off." Tavi demanded, reaching up to pull at the collar, but Damien just laughed at him.
"Come on Tavi, this is better for you. Would you rather be chained up all day whenever I leave? I'd have to take Marcie with me then, and I didn't think you would like that much." He said. It frustrated him that he was right, Tavi hated whenever he left the house with Marcie, like there was always a chance he might never see her again. Still, he was certain there had to be a better way than this.
***
"Damien, please." Tavi begged, on his knees at the edge of the invisible line he couldn't cross. Damien had been kind enough to carve an X into the tree, and others around the property so that Tavi was less likely to stumble past them accidentally. "Please, just give her back to me."
"No." Damien said simply, standing there just past the line, holding Marcie in his arms. The baby of course was unaware of anything wrong, her big brown eyes looking up at Damien, her little hands reaching for the key he wore on a chain around his neck- the key to Tavi's shock collar.
"I'm sorry, okay!" He cried. Damien had stormed off after Tavi shoved his hand away, rejecting his advances on him. Tavi always knew he was in trouble when Damien wordlessly walked out the door with Marcie in his arms, he knew if he wanted to have her back in his own anytime soon he would be expected to follow, to grovel at the edge of the driveway for Damien's forgiveness. "Please, just- just give my baby back, we can do whatever you want, just let me hold her again." He pleaded.
"She's our baby." Damien corrected him, grating on Tavi's nerves. Damien hadn't been forced to carry her for nine months, Damien hadn't been forced to give birth to her, Damien didn't spend nearly as much time home with her. As far as Tavi was concerned, Marcella was his baby. "I can hold her as much as I want, besides, she loves her daddy!" He said, he dangled the key on the chain over her, the baby giggling as she reached towards it. Were he not holding his child, Tavi might have started throwing rocks at him.
"What do you want from me?" He asked, looking at him desperately. "I'll do whatever you want, I won't say no, I won't push you away, I swear, just give her back."
"Why don't you crawl past that tree, and then I'll give her back to you." Damien offered, Tavi groaned in frustration, pulling at his own hair.
"I-I can't!" He cried. "You know I can't!"
"Then I guess you just don't want her back badly enough." Damien shrugged. "You only have to do it once, I'm not giving her back 'til you do."
Tavi was in tears at this point, he didn't want to do this, but he knew how stubborn Damien could be, and all he wanted was to have Marcie back in his arms. Finally, reluctantly, he crawled forward on his hands and knees, his heart racing as he forced himself to cross that invisible barrier, a painful electric shock immediately stopping him, he screamed in pain while Damien just laughed.
He stood there laughing at him, as Tavi pushed himself backwards to avoid another shock, but finally he collapsed in the dirt, shaking so badly he could hardly hold himself up. He looked up at Damien, the harder he laughed, the more Marcie was starting to smile, and soon she was giggling too, Tavi couldn't help it, he started sobbing, having to watch his daughter laugh while the man who tormented him held her was absolutely heart wrenching.
"Aww, she thinks it's funny too!" Damien laughed, giving Marcie a kiss on the forehead. "Looks like she got my sense of humor!" He teased him.
"Give her back." Tavi cried, feeling pathetic as he reached his arms up towards him, but as Damien got closer he suddenly kicked him down, knocking him back to the ground.
"I'm not handing her to you when you're all covered in dirt," Damien said, continuing back to the cabin, "Clean yourself up and maybe I'll let you hold her." He told him, and in his panicked state Tavi could only scramble to his feet, trying to follow him on shaking legs, ready to do anything and everything he was told to get her back from him.

âRun â get out â GO!âÂ
Pandemonium. Everyone has lost it. The whole place is in utter uproar. Voices scream out. Warning shouts are exchanged. Frantic orders are lost in the shrieking. Flashes whizz by, many of them sprinting madly for a single destination and I justâŚstand there. Stiff and frozen amongst the current insanity, staring with horrified eyes around me.Â
Everyone is justâŚrunning?
âC-come on!â
Krissy suddenly snatches up my hand. With a forceful tug, he drags me towards the gaping open entrance to the garden. Others are way ahead of us, having already reached the doors. A shoulder knocks into me. My ears ring painfully. Both of my grippy socks almost catch against the cobblestones. I barely stay on my feetâ
âStop â STOP!â
The nurses unsuccessfully try to block the wave of fleeing uniforms. Our skinny frames effortlessly weave past them, stumbling straight for the doorsâ
BRRRR. BRRR. BRRRR.
A warning droning echoes from the corridor outside. The crimson glow flickers in and out, adding to the already unnerving atmosphere.
âSecurity to the first floor â Code Red â I repeat â Code Red!â
The desperate hollers eventually fade behind us. Every alarm only intensifies its blaring around us. The two of us are swept away by the masses, stumbling along to avoid being left behind. More voices cry out to each other. A few grey shirts filter off in a different direction. Krissyâs hand remains locked around mine as we scramble along the corridor, searching forâ
No escape, Ashley.
My feet suddenly freeze. Itâs at that very moment that I finally regain my senses.
âWaitâKris, wait!â
My pleas go unheard, even as they continue to drag me after them. âWe canât do thisâwe need to go back!âÂ
âNo, we donât!â Krissy retaliates firmly, âNot now weâve alreadyââ
âB-but weâll get in trouble withâ!â
âAnd weâll be in even more trouble when security gets here!â he retorts, pulling my protesting form along, âWe gotta go now! Before they catch up!âÂ
Fear courses through my veins. The thought of returning to that colourless room and those horrible restraints makes me want to throw up.
Iâm not going back there again.
âKris, stopâstop!â
I dig my feet firmly into the floor, making it as difficult as possible for Krissy to get me to move.
âAsh whatâwhat are you doing?!âÂ
My feet remain stubbornly locked in position. No matter how hard Krissy pulls me, my body only sways slightly in retaliation. âDidnât you hear me?! We gotta go!â
âBut we canât!â I protest, panic entering my voice, âThis isnât right! Weâre supposed to stayâ!â
âLook around you, Ash! Who else here is staying put?â
He jerks his head around us, gesturing to the other fleeing patients. âNone of them are turning back, Ash. Not a single one. Doesnât that tell you something?â
I can see it for myself. Not one of them is hesitating. Theyâre all taking this one chance for freedom, as ludicrous as it feels. Confusion mounting, I peer desperately over my shoulder. Between the blaring alarms still tearing through my head and the evidence of fleeing patients in front of me..Iâm actually torn.
âB-butâ!â
A string of cries cuts me off. Krissy spins around with a gasp, just in time to see three other patients staggering against the wall. The nearest one clutches at her neck with a whimper, sparks flying from her choker. I inhale sharply.
âN-noâŚâ
Krissyâs face pales. His free hand moves for his choker, gulping. âHow are theyââ
âRemotes,â I answer uneasily, âThe guards have them â theyâre already activating them as a deterrent!âÂ
And itâs probably only a matter of time before ours go off too!
âH-how do we get them off?â Krissy asks immediately, brushing his fingers against his choker as I rack my brains for the answer.
It wasâŚoh God, come onâwhat was it?!
âThe guards â they used some kind of key,â I respond, swallowing uncomfortably, âI-I donât know how it worked, but somehow it controlled theââ
More shrieks pierce the air. Theyâre joined by a boyâs terrified pleading, then the sound of something being shot. Heavy hurried footsteps. A flicker of shadowy silhouettes further down the corridor.
No â theyâre already here?!
More collars spark to life. Bodies begin violently twitching as they go down. My neck begins to feel uncomfortably warmâ
âO-ours could be next.â
Krissy stiffens on the spot. I feel his hand starting to shake. All I can do is stare back into his brown irises. Our mounting fear is mirrored in our eyes.Â
Stay or run, it doesnât matter anymore! Itâs too late! Either way Iâll lose!
âW-we need to get to another floor,â I decide quickly, tightly grasping his hand, âGet far enough away before the shocks kick in â head for the stairs!â
âG-got it!â
We run. I donât let anything distract me. Not the footsteps, or the nearby screams for help that die down within seconds. Guilt gnaws at my chest â but thereâs nothing we can do. Nothing but keep on running.
âUp or down?â
âUp,â I pant, âH-hurry!âÂ
My bare feet pound against the cold laminate floor. Every step digs into my soles. Each exerted gasp for breath tugs at my chest. My heart rate soars. I barely avoid tripping in panic, focusing on climbing up the steps. Krissy wheezes beside me, all but throwing himself against the door as we make it to the next level. Below us, the footsteps sound distant, swarming around the second floor. We permit ourselves a quick sigh of relief.
âO-okay, now what?â
âWe jump one of the guards and get the key,â I improvise, chewing on my lower lip, âAfter that IâŚI-I donât know, we just uh, try to stay hidden or something?â
I peer back at him, wincing. âY-you got any other ideas, Kris?â
âNot really, butâwait.â
His eyes suddenly widen in realisation. âMy sketchbook! I never grabbed it!â
I feel my face twinging at their understandable panic. âOh GodâI gotta go back!â
âWe canât!â I hiss, âYou said it yourself â we need to keepââ
âBut what about all myâ!â
A sudden scream rings out from the stairwell behind us. Both of us flinch, our faces paling.Â
Damnitâ!
âNnghâŚn-never mind.â
Reluctant defeat shines in Krissyâs eyes. He gives his head a hard shake, forcing back any further complaints. âL-letâs just check the floor.â
I heave the doors open, allowing Krissy and I to slip through them. Weâre instantly bathed in the same red beams as the previous one. The sudden power-outage must be affecting the whole hospital. Surprisingly we donât run into any guards on this route, allowing us to sprint freely down the corridor, stopping in front of another pair of wide open doors.
âHere! Letâs hide in here for a sec!â Krissy urges, nudging me inside, âHopefully theyâll just walk straight past us!âÂ
âWait â which ward is this?â
âMaple Ward â which also happens to be my ward,â he replies quickly, âEither way, we should be safe forâhuh?â
Both of us pause beside what I assume to be the nursesâ station. The ward is practically empty. There isnât another person in sight â and thatâs not the only glaringly odd thing.
âThe doors â theyâre all open!â
Clusters of sturdy doors â unlocked doors â line the ward corridors. Hurrying to the nearest one, we peek inside the abandoned room. No oneâs inside. We try a second and then a third. No patients. No nurses. The same is probably true for the other rooms.Â
âAnd theyâre all empty,â I realise, wincing, âso the patients here must have tried to run too.âÂ
âLooks like it,â Krissy sighs, âI guess the powercut even took out these doors â not that Iâm complaining!âÂ
My attention shifts to the nearby ID lock. Moving closer to inspect it, I squint down at the little device. Something is instantly off.Â
âOr maybe this had something to do with it?â
Krissy soon joins me, blinking in shock.
âWhoa,â he gasps, âThe lockâs totally fried.â
He checks the previous cellâs lock, being met with a similar result. âAll of them are!â
âFriedâ would be a bit of an understatement. Multiple sparks leap from the electronic device, dancing over the now blackened metal. Wires peek out from the inside, fully exposed. All of them are a frazzled mess.
Those definitely wonât be functioning again anytime soon.Â
âI bet the other wards are the same,â I murmur, backing away from the lock, âwhich means the whole hospital must be inâhnnk!âÂ
The shock almost takes my breath away. A horribly familiar stinging shoots across my neck. I grimace, leaning against the wall for support. Even Krissy has to help steady me to keep me on my feet.
âAsh! Are youââ
âFine â nngh â I-Iâm fine,â I force out, taking a few deep breaths, âbut we really need to find that key before yours startsââ
I trail off. A sudden familiar sound plays out in the distance â footsteps.
âThat might be one of them now!â Krissy hisses, helping me along, âO-okay, how are we gonnaââ
âWait.â
I hold up a hand, listening closer to the approaching footsteps. I misheard it the first time, but definitely not this time.
Clacking.
Oh no...
âThatâs not a guard, Kris!â
Frantically, my eyes scan the ward for any potential hiding spots. Just a couple of metres away is a brown squishy couch. âGet down, now!âÂ
The two of us hurry towards it, dropping onto the ground. My back presses against tacky leather. The collar shocks me again, actually sparking this time. My pained cry is muffled by my own hand. I stuff it into my mouth, biting down on it to keep quiet. Krissy takes hushed shaky breaths beside me. Our shoulders brush against each other. Weâre just as tense as each other. The footsteps are now louder than ever, coming from the ward entrance. The clacking heels carry through the silent area. A few seconds later, I see his tall figure sweep past the lounge, before stopping about ten metres away.
â...verdammt.â
I canât see the expression on his face from here, but I can definitely hear the panicked edge to his curse. âWhere areâhow did thisâscheisse!â
Both of us flinch against the couch at his uncharacteristically fierce yell. I bite down on my fist even harderâ
âVoss!â
An unfamiliar figure storms through the open doors. Swallowing, I dare to peer around the couch, catching a glimpse of his main features. Both of his sharp piercing eyes narrow in a glare, aimed directly at the doctor. âUpdate, now. What is happening?â
I shudder at his intimidating air, especially the stern expression of authority twisting his tanned face. It goes perfectly well with his short grey buzzcut and dark ironed uniform.Â
âThe power outage is affecting the whole building,â Dr Voss answers carefully, âI have no idea who or what is responsible, but I am putting the entire facility into lockdown. No one is to leave or enter until every single one of my patients have been relocated and brought back to their wards.â
âAnd Slade?â the other man demands gruffly.
âRest assured, General, he will be found.â
My eyes widen.
Wait, Slade? As in Doctor Slade? But wasnât he transferred to anotherâ
âHe better be,â he grunts, âThat old man is like a thorn in my side. Always been a real piece of work â and I canât even kill him for it.âÂ
Whatâs goingâack!
The collar zaps me again. I barely muffle a sob in my knuckle. My eyes sting. A metallic tang hits my tongue. Krissy sucks in an anxious breath.Â
Not. A. Soundâ
âYou do realise whatâs at stake here, Voss?â General Guy continues, âHis existing knowledge makes him a threat to the US Counterintelligence Department. If that gets out and we allow his kind to run around unchecked like a loose cannonââ
âI do understand, General. I know full well what is at stake for you and I gave you my word that I would prevent that,â Dr Voss responds through gritted teeth, âI promise you, it will only be a matter of time before he is found.â
âGood. Iâve called my men to provide backup, but I would have hoped your existing security measures might have taken an event like this into account. Believe me, this is more than a simple power outage to cause this muchââ
âSir!â
Another pair of footsteps ring out. I clamp my hands over my mouth, panting through the pain of the ongoing shocks. âWe got all the main floors covered and the exits secured. Theyâre all being apprehended as we speak and weâre working on the backup generator. None of them should breach theââ
âHow many of them are still out there?â
âUh, weâre still cross-referencing ID numbers butââ
âThen get me those exact numbers so we know who is still yet to be accounted for!â my doctor demands, frustration evident in his tone, âYou know the ones most at risk. They are the priority, understood? Focus the bulk of your efforts on securing them â especially the sanitatems! I want them back in their rooms and this power outage resolved as soon as possible!âÂ
âAnd if it canât be?â General Guy asks coolly.
âIf not, then we will have no choice but to organise a mass transfer to another facility. Pembrooke always has at least one alternative option. Trust me, General, we will fix this.â
I feel my throat tightening at the desperation in his raised voice. Krissy muffles his own breathing behind his hands. âAnd why are you still standing there, Jenkins?â
âOh uh, I was just leaving, sirââ
âThen go! Dismissed!âÂ
The guard wisely hurries away without wasting another second, the othersâ footsteps soon joining his own. As shaken as we both are, we know what we have to do â especially as the collar burns my neck again. Drawing more blood from my knuckles, I finally remove my hand, peeking behind the edge of the couch. Both doctor and general have already moved away.Â
âI-I think weâre good,â I whisper, âFollow that guard.â
âR-right.â
The two of us cautiously make our move. Soon Maple Ward is far behind us, our sights set on our new target. My legs are quickly growing weaker from the shocks, but I bite through it, ignoring the red teeth marks that decorate my knuckle. Iâm just very glad that Krissy hasnât had to deal with this himself. After carefully checking our bearings, we creep after the unsuspecting guard. No one else is around in the corridor. Itâs just us.
âOkay,â Krissy breathes, mentally psyching himself up, âLetâs get him.â
This is mad â but to quote the Cheshire Cat: âweâre all mad hereâ. Literally. This is a psych hospital after all...I think?
I decide to swallow the lingering doubts for now.
âWe run at him on three. One, two ââ
âThree!â
The two of us barrel into him with a yell. Itâs enough to knock the guard off his feet, kicking his large form to the ground.Â
âHey â gnngh â get off me, you brat!âÂ
âFat chance!â Krissy snaps, scrabbling furiously with him, âAsh, the key! Grab itâack!â
My companion cries out as heâs easily tossed aside. Seizing my chance, I make a grab for the guardâs belt, trying to snag the key. His surprisingly strong grip instantly locks around my wrist, pinning me in place.
âNice try, kid,â he growls, jerking his head up at the sound of distant footsteps, âHey! Down here! I got two more runaways!â
More uniforms start appearing around us. My face pales.Â
Not good!
In a last desperate bid to get free, I find the exposed skin of his wrist and bite down on it â hard. His curses are lost over the sound of my racing heart. Yanking myself free, I begin to run.
âQuick! That way!â
Snatching onto my hand, Krissy tugs me down the adjoining corridor. The footsteps follow after us, hurrying in hot pursuit. Warning sparks erupt from the collar as it proceeds to shock me again.Â
No!
This time, I allow myself to scream.
âAsh!â
Krissy stops beside me. He grabs onto my arm to support me as my knees almost give way, âWe gotta hurry! Theyâre right behindââ
âI know!â I pant, blood dribbling down my chin from earlier, âJust keep going!â
âNot on my own!â he retorts, pulling me along, âNow help me out here â hnnk!â
Krissy starts to cough, slowing slightly under my weight as we stumble onwards. Gritting my teeth through the pain, I force myself after him. My body twitches from the remnants of the last shock still coursing through my system. I try to keep track of the directions and corridors, even with the guardsâ threats ringing behind us.
Down â then right â then another right, thenâ!
Our feet come to an abrupt halt. The corridor doesnât branch off anywhere. It doesnât show any signs of continuing. All that faces us is a door leading to a small storeroom. Itâs the only door in or out â and thereâs definitely no place to hide in there.
âD-dead end?â Krissy stammers in disbelief, âbutâ!â
âHold it there, kids!â
One glance over our shoulders reveals we wonât be slipping past the guards. Four of them block our path, leering at us severely. All four of them are armed with similar weapons. Backtracking isnât an option.Â
Weâre both cornered and outnumbered.
No escape. Just like he saidâ
âJust be good and come along quietly,â the tallest one orders as they start to close in on us, âDonât make us have to use force.â
âB-back off!â Krissy snaps, his wavering voice betraying his fear, âDonât you touch us!â
I can see the tears shining in his eyes, revealing how afraid he really is. Noticing that, I pull myself in front of him, holding out my arms.
âStay away from us.â
ItâŚhonestly sounds pathetic. I must look pathetic, with my weedy shaking arms and my own teary cheeks. Even so, I bare my teeth in warning, glaring at them all. âD-donât come any closer!â
Krissy blinks back at me fearfully.
âAshââ
âHeh, looks like weâve got ourselves a hero.â
I growl at the stubbiest one, pressing back just a little as they aim their weapons in our direction. âThis isnât playtime, kid. Just give up. Thereâs nowhere for you to run.â
Heâs right â I know he is â but my gut still tells me to hold my ground.
âNnghâŚn-no.â
My response only elicits another grim glare from Leader. Krissy grabs onto my arm as they shuffle closer. Their weapons pulse with electricity, probably stunners or something. Nothing pleasant at all. Â
âThen donât say you werenât given a chance.â
The triggers all click in unison. I screw my eyes shut, bracing myself for the pain â a pain that never comes.
âHuh?â
Krissy inhales sharply. Daring to open a single eye, I see the guards still aiming at us, repeatedly clicking their triggers. Frustration crosses their faces asâŚnothing happens. The electric sparks around them die, fizzling out as their weapons are rendered useless.
How did that justâ
âWow. What a bunch of cowards.â
My other eye quickly opens at the new voice. The guardsâ attention is no longer on us. All of them are turned towards a fifth figure. I canât see much from our current distance, but he also seems to be wearing a grey shirt that clings to his tanned form, a scowl filling his face. âFour armed guys against two helpless kids? Thatâs a pretty unfair setup right there, donât you think?â
I can hear the disgust in his voice as he continues. âWhatâs the matter? Scared of a couple of unarmed teenagers? Or maybe you dumbasses just donât know how to count?â
Leader slowly turns around. I almost expect him to start breathing fire.
âWho are you toââ
âI would suggest using the calculator app on your phones, but actually that will be kinda useless from riiiight aboutâŚnow.â
The effect is instantaneous. Multiple items simultaneously frazzle from inside their pockets, charring the fabric of their trousers. Their only responses are exclamations of shock and fury.Â
What in theâ
âD-did he just break their phones?â Krissy hisses to me, blinking in shock, âWithout even touching them?!â
âLooks like itââ
âWhoops, I did it again.â
The stranger shakes his head, his messy dark hair brushing past his eyes. A smirk sits firmly on his face. âHope those were brand new â itâs the least a bunch of lowlifes like you deserve.â
Wait, is he the one who fried all the locks backâAGH!
Another shock tears through me. My knees finally do give out as I drop to the ground, grabbing at the collar. The mysterious stranger stares back in our direction. His eyes narrow.
âAnd they definitely wonât be needing those things anymore.â
Heâs barely uttered that last promise before I hear a familiar whirring against my neck.Â
The collar!Â
The shocks stop. My limbs are still shaking even as the metal clasp unlocks. The collar slips free to the floor with a final clang. Almost immediately I begin to feel it again â the heat, the burning, the fire. It spreads through every nerve and every cell, slowly filling my body. Even through my blurred vision, Iâm able to see it clearly. No matter how many times I blink, itâs still there, leaping off my fingers.
The green fire.
Then that meansâ!
âI-I knew itâŚâ
Suddenly it all comes back. Everything I had been fighting, all that I had been denying, each memory that was just âall in my headâ â itâs there. Itâs right there in front of me. Even now I still doubt it, but itâs literally glowing before my eyes.Â
âWh-whatâŚtheâŚheck?â
Krissy is frozen behind me. His mouth gapes open, gawping at me as if Iâve just grown a second head. Thatâs all the evidence I need to know the truth.
This is real.
Unfortunately, we donât have the time for explanations right now.
âSigmasâstop them!â
Before Iâve even properly recovered, two of them are heading straight for us. The other two take on Electric Guy. He lunges forward, cursing in what I assume to be a foreign language.
âPorraâdonât worry! Iâll take âem downânngh!â
Before we can respond the two other guards are grabbing at us. I donât give them a chance. I just throw the green fire right in their faces. Both of them shriek out in fury. At the same time, Krissy finally recovers enough to join me.
âHyagh!â
He drives his elbow sharply into the second oneâs side, using his limited strength to fight. I kick wildly, trying to sweep the guardâs legs out from under him whilst trying to remember the main fight scenes from every action movie Iâve ever watched. Across from us, I notice Electric Guy shoving one of the guards against the wall.Â
âYou picked the wrong supers to mess with, buddy!â
He wastes no time leaping to our aid. His knuckles drive into the taller oneâs stomach, sending him down to the ground with a groan. As Electric Guy aims another well-aimed kick in his direction, I notice Krissy struggling madly, pinned firmly against the wall.
âNngho â nngh â get off!âÂ
âKris!â
I donât hesitate. I throw myself onto the guardâs back, wrapping my fiery hands around his neck to force him to let go. It gives Krissy just enough time to scramble a safe distance away. What I had not anticipated was for the guard to grasp onto my upper body and flip me viciously over his head. A startled yell leaves my throat, followed by a pained grunt as my back slams into the hard floor behind me.Â
âBig mistake, kid.â
My assailantâs rough fingers suddenly wrap around my neck. I choke, desperately clawing at his arms in panic whilst trying to burn him with the fire-thing. His hold eventually loosens and I roll out from under him. Wheezing through my constricted throat, I throw another wave of fire at him to slow him down. Krissy grabs onto my shoulders, pulling me further away from the now furious guard.Â
Crap crap crapâ
âOho youâre gonna regret that, brat.â
He ominously stalks towards us â but he never gets to make good on his threat. âGnnkâwhat are youâhnnk!â
âDonât say you werenât given a chance, Ugly.â
With that ironic sense of karma, Electric Guy tightens his chokehold, rendering our attacker unconscious in a matter of a few seconds. As his body drops to the ground, Electric Guy spins towards us. His expression quickly softens. âYou two alright? Not hurt?â
âW-weâll live,â I answer shakily, still rubbing my sore throat, âThanks for stepping in, uhââ
âDonât mention it, bud.â
He peers down at us, holding out his hand. âCome on, we probably shouldnât stick around here. They wonât stay down for long.â
No objections with that plan!
I grasp onto his hand tightly, allowing him to pull me to my feet. I canât help but trace along my bare throat as he pulls Krissy back up, feeling somewhatâŚweird without the collar. Iâve been so used to that cold feeling around my neck, wearing it every single day. I almost feel...naked without it, as if a part of my identity has been stripped away.Â
All we can do is nod. With no other complaints, Electric Guy takes the lead. The two of us somewhat awkwardly follow him along the corridors, doing our best to keep up. Iâm still a little wobbly on my legs from the earlier shocks, but the feeling is thankfully fading now, instead being replaced with a welcoming energy that radiates from my figure. It looks completely out of place when set against the current crimson glow of the entire floor.
Wow. Green makes a nice contrast against red.
We move quietly, sticking to the walls where possible. Weâre fortunate enough not to physically encounter any more guards, although the distant cries of re-captured patients are impossible to miss. Gritting our teeth, we stumble onwards, finally stopping outside of another ward â and just as I predicted, itâs as abandoned as the last one.
âOkay, weâll stop here for a sec, catch our breath a lil.â
Electric Guy herds us inside the nearest room of the ward. The only contrast it has with Maple Ward is the position of the lounge and the lack of fried ID locks beside the open doors.
âHow come these locks arenât fried?â I ask, dropping down on the empty bed next to Krissy.
âOh, those probably went out when I cut off the main power supply,â Electric Guy explains, âI imagine itâs the same for the other wards â but those fried locks you mentioned? I had to take care of those first when I busted out of my own âwardâ.â
The stranger sighs, perching himself on the edge of a wooden deskchair. âHeh, good thing they fell for my whole âcontrolâ act, amirite?â
âUh...sure?â
Not entirely sure what that means, but sure?
âAnyway, now thatâs dealt with â youâre sure youâre not hurt? I thought this psycho place was bad enough already, but now theyâre keeping kids here too?â
His dark brown eyes take on a furious expression. âNem fodendo...no wonder he was so keen to investigate Pembrooke.â
He scowls, squaring his shoulders. âAnd no way am I letting a pair of innocent kids get hurt on my watch. Donât worry, weâre gonna get you two outta here with us, okay?â
âWaitâus?â
âYeah, IâŚactually came here for a friend of mine.â
Electric Guy grits his teeth. âHeâs been missing for several months. No leads for ages until I found out about this place. He didnât tell us where he was going or what he was doing, but yeah. I basically let them catch me so I could break him out from the inside. Bit of a Trojan Horse scenario.â
So thatâs why he did all that.
âDo you know where heâs meant to be?â
âShould be on this floor â I think his file said Oak Ward or something, so thatâs where weâre heading next.â
He hesitates, looking uneasy. âI justâŚhope heâs okay.â
âHopefully he is.â
I send him a sympathetic look, wiping the dried blood from my chin. Although his words spark a little hope in my chest, I canât ignore one glaringly obvious obstacle. âBut even if we do find himâŚarenât they also putting the whole building into lockdown right now?âÂ
âThat uhâŚis true,â he concedes, wincing, âKinda didnât think that far ahead â but donât worry! Weâll find a way out. At least we have the means to fight back â especially you, buddy.â
He sends me a friendly smile. âThat was a pretty impressive light show back there. When did youââ
âYeah uhâŚabout that.â
Krissy â who has been pretty much silent this whole time â finally speaks up. âAshâŚhow are you still glowing green?â
I awkwardly glance down at my hands. Emerald sparks continue to flicker across my palms, giving off a very obvious glow.Â
Oookay. How to word this without coming off as completely deluded?
âI-I know how it looks, Krisââ
âBut youâre likeâyouâre literally glowing green!â he sputters clearly overwhelmed, âAnd donât get me started with what happened back there! You justâhow was that even possible?!â
âY-yeah, I kinda freaked out the first time too,â I reassure him, wincing a little, âbut I can explain. I know itâs insane, but I can explain.â
âO-okay,â Krissy stammers, still in shock, âIâm listening.â
I swallow, not quite sure how to actually explain it. Electric Guy gives me an encouraging nod.
âR-right,â I begin, bracing myself, âBasically uh...Iâm a super.â
My companion just stares at me.
â...youâre a what?â
Great start, Ash.
âY-yeah, superpowers exist,â I reply, knowing I must sound completely crazy right now, âand so do superheroes, apparently.â
Krissy remains quiet, blinking in disbelief at me.
â...youâre kidding me.â
âNope, not kidding.â
Electric Guy suddenly speaks up again, leaning casually back in his chair. âAnd weâre definitely not the only ones. There are a tonne of different supers out there, each with their own supernatural abilities. Flight, destructive strength, energy manipulation, the most weird and wacky ability you could ever imagine â you name it. It probably exists.â
âBut thatâs justâthatâsâŚno.â
Krissy responds with a weak laugh. âC-come on, really? Supernatural abilities? Energy manipulation? Thereâs no way that stuff really exists!â
He pauses when neither of us join in. âUh...d-does it?â
Electric Guy chooses not to comment. Iâm on my own with this one.
âIâŚguess so?â I answer, wincing, âIâm still very new to all of this too.â
â...oh-kay?â
Krissy takes a deep breath, still clearly shaken. âSoâŚjust to recap, you guys have these weird supernatural abilities like green fire and breaking electronics â and superpowers are totally a thing now?â
He stares back at me pleadingly, as if waiting for some other kind of explanation. Unfortunately, I donât have another explanation to give.Â
â...pretty much?â
Krissy falls quiet for several moments, processing our revelation. I silently wince.
I guess this was how Dr Slade must have felt when he was trying to explain it to me.
âR-right. Sure. That makesâŚperfect sense.â
He shakes his head helplessly, looking ratherâŚfrazzled. âT-totally nothing crazy about any of this at allâŚâ
âWeâll explain more later,â Electric Guy insists, realising this conversation isnât helping, âbut we donât have the time now. Trust me, itâs a long story.â
âY-you donât sayâŚâ
Krissy licks his lips, attempting to absorb it all. âFine. Iâll uh, try to save the list of questions for after we get outta here. Spoiler alert â itâs a long list.â
âAtta boy,â the super replies, sending Krissy a sympathetic look, âFor now, just keep an open-mind, alright?â
âSure, uhâŚwhatever you say.â
He rubs his forehead, still looking completely overwhelmed. âS-sorry this is justâŚa lot.â
âNo need to apologise, kidâwait, I never even got your names back there, did I?â
Our rescuer groans, slapping a hand against his face. âBrilliant job, Benji.â
Well, now we know his name at least.
âIâm Ashley,â I respond, almost automatically, âor...you can call me Ash.â
âKrissy â and uhâŚyouâre Benji?â
âYep,â he confirms with an enthusiastic nod, âGlad to meetcha. Sure, it would have been nicer under better circumstances, but beggars canât be choosers.â
He gets up from the chair, stretching his arms. âAnd now that we all know each other we should probably get moving again. Donât want any more unwanted company catching us up. Have you two had enough time to catch your breath?â
âWeâll be fine,â I answer, inhaling deeply again for good measure, âKris?â
âY-yeah, all good.â
âGood. Then letâs move out.â
Now wearing a confident grin, Electric Guy leads us back into the chaos with a raised fist. âAdiante!â
âŚyep, this is really happening.
Following Benjiâs lead, we head back onto the main floor. Every twist and turn makes my head spin, but we have no choice but to keep going. Despite having only just met him, I canât help but immediately feel safer with Benji guiding us. He holds us back, checks each direction and ushers us forward only when heâs one hundred percent certain that it's safe. He stands in the face of danger the whole time, ready to fight any guards that would dare to lay a finger on us. His calloused hands pull us back into the darkest corners every time we hear the warning footsteps. Itâs through those combined strategies that weâre mostly able to avoid the attention of the other uniforms. Good thing too, because now even more of them are beginning to sweep across the floor.
âGeez, do they just infinitely spawn or something?â Krissy whispers, both of us partially squashed together against the wall.
âWouldnât surprise me,â Benji mutters, waiting for the current flock to pass, âOkay, stick to the walls for now. Once weâve got my friend, weâll be outta here for good.â
We hurry wordlessly behind him without a single protest. His long strides are a little difficult to keep up with, but we just about manage to stay on his tail.
âHow big is this place?â I ask, trying to keep my panting to a minimum, âIs there much above this floor orââ
âOne more floor, not including the rooftop,â he grunts, âIâve seen worse, but still, three floors plus the ground floor is definitely enough to deal with right nowâlook out!â
He suddenly shoves us aside, away from the three guards now barrelling towards us. As the tell-tale sound of malfunctioning electronics sounds out around us, I try to use the green fire again to throw them off â with try being the key word.
âHey, watch it!â
âS-sorry, Kris!âÂ
Trying not to think about how close I had been to actually burning him, I instead turn my attention to the other goon. The green flames make an excellent distraction, even as I clumsily throw them around, trying to hit something.Â
Crap â gotta be more careful!
My aims are far-off target, but the light does blind our attackers enough to allow us to run past them. Unsurprisingly, Benji delivers a moreâŚprecise aim.
âSir, theyâre over by Oak Ward! The kids areâurk!â
The guardâs communicator flies through the air, landing some feet away on the ground. As Benji forcibly holds him back, Krissy and I do our bit by crushing it beneath our feet. The sound of crunching metal is oddly satisfying. The former device lies in a broken mess beneath our sock-clad soles, allowing Benji to deal with its owner.
âNngh â and stay down, cretinos!â
He gives the goon a last kick to the side for good measure, before bending down to search his pockets. âDonât forget to check âem. You never know what might come in handy.â
âO-okay!â
At Benjiâs advice, the two of us hesitantly begin checking the guardsâ stash. My own search comes up with an ID card, some plastic zip ties and a wrapped protein bar. I shove them in my own pockets before following Benji and Krissy down the next corridor. We take a different direction now, remaining vigilant the whole time. I ignore the burning in my chest as we continue moving. Somehow I canât resist the temptation to look over my shoulder. The growing sound of other subjectsâ screams brings fresh tears to my eyes. Our new companion curses under his breath, no doubt in his own native tongue.
That could be us at any momentâ
âB-Benji, the othersââ
âI know, but we canât do anything for them if we donât get out ourselves,â he grunts, âand the only way weâll do that is ifâwait.â
He suddenly stops us. I almost skid right into him before I manage to catch my balance against the wall. âThereâs another one up ahead.â
Great. Just what we need.
âDo we all run at him?âÂ
âProbably the best plan,â Benji mutters to Krissy, already bracing himself for attack, âAlright. Wait for it, wait for itâŚnow!â
The three of us lunge forward at once. As the footsteps turn the corner, we all jump for him in unison.
âWhat theâbloody hell!â
I barely manage to stop myself in time. Unfortunately, the same canât be said for Benji and Krissy. The former even manages to land a solid punch to the guyâs nose, sending the plain-shirted figure stumbling back into the corridor.
âWaitâBenji, wait!â
Thankfully he recognises his mistake when he sees the tell-tale patient uniform amongst the red.
âOh! Oh geez, uhâsorry! I thought you were one of themâ!â
âDo I look like one of those hooligans?â the man snaps, shaking his dark overgrown hair, âWhatever, just let me through so I canâLightbug?!â
His attention suddenly shifts to me. All signs of annoyance vanish from his face.
âDr Slade?!â
Without another word, my former neighbour sweeps right past the now open-mouthed Benji, stumbling towards me. Relief fills his eyes as he clutches my shoulders, gripping me in something resembling an awkward half-hug.
âOh thank God! I thought Iâd never see you again, lad! Are youâoh my God what has he done to you?â
He holds me at armâs length for a moment, surveying my form. Growing anger creeps across his face. âThat tubeâAsh youâve lost so much weightââ
âI-Iâm fine,â I attempt to reassure him, taking in theâŚnotable differences to his own appearance, âHow did youâhe said theyâd transferred you or someâwait, are you hurtââ
âIâll be arite. Just â nngh â not quite so fast at healing myself lately.â
The small smile on his face is clearly forced. Combined with the prominent dark shadows under his eyes, the emphasised pale complexion of his skin and the way he winces with every sharp intake of breath, he looks a mess. Thatâs not even taking into account the dark spatters on his clothes, a stark contrast from the white of the shirt that hangs off him like a tent.
âYou know this guy?â
Benji peers at me over his shoulder, quietly observing our reunion.
âY-yeah, he was my former neighbour on Poplar Ward. We tried to escape a while ago, but weâŚdidnât make it.â
Trying not to shudder at the memory, I gesture towards my other two companions. âDr Slade, this is Krissy and Benji. Heâs a super too, breaks electronics. He caused this whole powercut and saved us from a group of guards earlier and now weâreââ
âI see. Well, itâs always good to meet another super. The more the merrier as they say.â
âY-yeah, you too, Doc,â Benji replies, still lookingâŚpretty awkward about the earlier mishap, âHey, uh, did you just come from Oak Ward?â
âAye, that we did,â the doctor answers, dusting off his pants, âWhy do youââ
âAny chance that youâve seen my buddy around? They were holding him there too, his nameâsââ
âDougie!â
A familiar voice calls out from behind Dr Slade. My head jerks in its direction.
WaitâI thought Dr Voss dismissed him?!
Apparently not, because sure enough he comes jogging around the corner. Even though I know itâs him, he also looksâŚdifferent. Most obvious is the fact that his former apprentice garb has now been replaced with the same uniform that Dr Slade and I are wearing, grippy socks included. His hair still remains in its signature ponytail, although now in a much more dishevelled state, with multiple stray strands out of place. Dark rings outline his own equally tired eyes, whilst the dry tracks on his cheeks betray his true feelings. Even his voice seems to have lost some of its usual brightness.
âDex!â
It takes me a few seconds to realise Iâm not the only one crying out his name.Â
âAsh! Iâm so glad youâreâBenji?!â
Before I can turn around, Benji is already striding past us, pushing towards the former apprentice, whose eyes are now wide and alert.
âD-damn you, Dex â you scared us to death!âÂ
The electric-breaking super throws his arms around the blondeâs shoulders, hugging him close.I notice him trembling a little as he clings to him, breathing heavily.
âBenjiâŚh-hey buddy,â he murmurs, desperately trying to keep his voice level, âGod itâs so good to see youâw-wait, what are you doing here?â
âUh, I could ask you the same questionââ
âHold onâyou two know each other?âÂ
Benjiâs attention momentarily shifts towards us at Krissyâs disbelieving question, a sigh escaping his lips. I put the pieces together pretty quickly.
So this is who Benji was talking about!
âUhuh,â Benji replies, âDex is an old friend, who also has a tendency of getting himself into trouble â and speaking of trouble, what the heck were you thinking?!â
The dark haired man pushes Dex away slightly, frustration entering his voice. His friend swallows.
âI-I can explainââ
âYouâd better! Running off to do a solo mission on your own without telling any of us where you were going?! Just up and disappearing for several months?! Weâve been worried sick! You left us no leads and if youâd actually told us where you were going, then we might have been able to find you a lot sooner, dumbass!â
Itâs impossible to ignore BenjiâsâŚvalid venting right now. Dex just sighs in exasperation.
âLook at us! This is exactly why I didnât tell you, Benji!â the blonde retaliates, gritting his teeth tightly, âIt was too dangerous. Pembrooke does not mess around! I wasnât gonna let them go after you guys too! Besides, I had it all under controlââ
âUhuh â which is why youâre wearing one of those stupid uniforms right now?â
Dex shuts up at Benjiâs obvious statement, gritting his teeth.
âLike youâre one to talk, since youâre also wearing oneââ
âOnly because I let myself get caught so I could break your idiot butt outta here!â Benji shoots back,Â
âThatâs not an invitation for you to throw yourself into the danger zone too, Benji!âÂ
âYou know me, Dex. Always disobeying orders.â
âIâm serious! These guys areâ!â
âSorry to interrupt, but now is really not the time.â
Thankfully Dr Slade has enough sense to step in. âYou lads can talk more about it once weâre safe. Until then, we drop all disagreements and work together, arite?â
Wow. Dr Slade actually suggested something that doesnât sound completely crazy for once.Â
â...sure thing, Dougie.â
âAnd please stop calling me that,â the doctor sighs, pinching his nose, âArite. Whatâs our next move?â
âUm, probably getting out of here?â Krissy answers, wincing.
âExactlyââ
âBut with the whole place in lockdown, then what options do we have?â
âHeâs right,â Benji adds, backing me up, âAll the main routes outta here are bound to be surrounded on both sides.â
Krissyâs face pales.
âSo...does that mean weâre just stuck here until theyââ
âNot quite, lad.â
The older doctor fixes us with a firm expression. âItâs risky, but there is one way out that we havenât considered yet.â
âR-really?â
âAye â and if we canât get out through the usual way, then our only other option is through theâJesus!â
A sudden high pitched sound rips across the corridor. All of us cover our ears, wincing. The red pulsing glow ebbs away. Every light flickers back to its usual shade. Our isolated forms are bathed in spotlights â and very visible.
âThe lightsâ!â
âMotherâs son,â Dr Slade curses, âthey must have gotten the backup generator running!â
âDroga,â Benji hisses, casting a quick glance over his shoulder, âYou know where weâre going, Doc?â
âI do, butââ
âDefinitely not that way â unless you want inside experience of the procedure labs, which I would not recommend,â Dex adds, shuddering, âI-I donât know about you guys, but I happen to be pretty attached to my organs.â
My insides churn at his implication â and especially the sound of more approaching footsteps. Shaking his head, the former apprentice grits his teeth, forcing confidence into his voice. âO-okay, lead the way, DougâDoc.â
He aims that last part at Krissy and I. The two of us share a wary glance, before quickly nodding in agreement. Just like that, our mind is made up. Weâre actually doing this â escaping.
No turning back now.
Oh wow...I am SUPER late with this! (pun not intended, haha!)
Sorry I've been procrastinating so unnecessarily hard on uploading here. March was full of birthdays and portfolio work and preparing for my new medical rotation so it's been pretty busy, but progress is ongoing. Apologies for taking so long for those following and thank you so much for your patience!
And so the escape continues! And the party finally comes together! Definitely had fun writing this one and hopefully I'll get back to my usual upload schedule soon. No promises, but I'll try to be consistent! :D
Wishing everyone a really great week ahead, best wishes and see you in the next chapter! :D Thank you so much for sticking around! xx

The whumper loved showing off how well theyâd conditioned their whumpee, who didnât fight or even glare at them anymore. At this point the shock collar around the whumpee was just for show, but sometimes the whumper would turn it on just to amuse themselves. The whumpee may be obedient now, but that didnât make the whumper any less cruel.

Controversy surrounds the efficacy and welfare implications of different forms of dog training with several studies asserting that electroni
This is an embarassingly bad paper based on the use of two aversive based dog trainers who are clearly incompetant in the use of +R - yet the e collar training community is taking a victory lap.
The fact that this got past an animal ethics review is honestly appalling and the university should be ashamed.
Let's go over the main huge flaws with this study:
The positive reinforcement protocol they are using to compare to e collars is laughably incompetant - with no management or use of distance, desensitisation. Just use a leash? Maybe?
Use of aversives to stop chasing is, unsurprisingly, effective. Because, yes, painful consequences tend to work to suppress behaviour. That isn't the problem that people have with e collars.
The author seems to think that use of e collars is justified because it "gets results" in a short amount of time to stop dogs chasing - again, apparently we haven't heard of a leash.
"Aside from presumably pain-induced yelps in the dogs with e-collars when they received shocks, none of the dogs in any groups showed any signs of stress or distress." So we're saying a pain vocalisation isn't a sign of distress? That's your welfare parameter? Jfc.
Love how they didn't even try to get fecal cortisol baselines and just collected samples from a few dogs but not all of them. You tried, I guess?
The fact that the trainers for the study is "Ivan and Ivan's Student" is ridiculously biased. Acting as if both these trainers know how to apply +R effectively as opposed to their heavy aversive tool use is laughable.
"We designed our studyâs methods around current trainer practices as well as the recommendations of our senior trainer while attempting to keep continencies as simple as possible." - yeeeah that's a conflict of interest. Especially when your "senior trainer" has an axe to grind with R+ people using scientific papers to support their training methods.
You're chucking treats in a bowl after a few sessions and you think that's going to stop a dog chasing a lure? Oh yeah, you got us. We just throw kibble in a bowl to stop dogs running into traffic. I am genuinely floored that that's how they think a +R protocol for chasing works. They have no business comparing the two when they can't even do one properly.
"We also did not test whether the food rewards we deployed were highly valued." Okay so the majority of my client dogs will go nuts for my meaty high value treats because they've only had store bought dry treats and the client is shocked at how food motivated their dog suddenly is..... So this study was relying on whatever the guardian of the dog brought with them lmao rookie mistake.
"Dogs that chase livestock may be shot or otherwise euthanized, and dogs that chase cars may be killed in traffic." Put. Them. On. A. Leash.
"The practical applicability of either the LIMA or LIFE models is likely limited, at least in the United States where dog trainers are not required to be licensed or certified. In a sample of highly rated dog trainers, more than half did not document any relevant education." Does that include your "senior trainer"? It does. Because he doesn't have any formal education in canine behaviour, welfare and science. You know this. You chose him to be your trainer for your study.
"The speed and effectiveness with which the e-collar inhibited the dogs in this study from chasing may justify the limited number of painful stimulations the dogs experienced if the object the dogs were chasing had been something that could directly or indirectly cause them serious injury or death." Or..... OR.... you could not use electric shocks on your dog and potential cause long term damage, fear responses ect.... And use a leash.
Just baffled by this whole study. My high prey drive whippet will go feral for a lure but only when she knows the context for when she's being allowed to chase. She can be at a lure coursing trial for the whole day not worrying about the lure because 1) I keep her at a distance where the stimulus isn't saliant enough and 2) she gets reinforcement for calmly watching from a distance.
I'm honestly getting second hand embarassment reading this study. It's just such bad science should never have gotten past an ethics board.
Whumper who trains whumpee to obey with the use of a shock collar.
Every time whumpee screws up a command, they receive an intense, painful shock to the jugular that instantly snaps them back to attention. That usually motivates them to quickly fix what they did wrong.
"Did that sting? Good. Now try again, and get it right this time."
If the whumpee continues to fail, whumper turns up the dial, increasing the intensity of the shocks until they're finally corrected.
Some nights after they've been 'training' for hours, the throbbing pain around their neck prevents them from getting comfortable enough to rest- leading to lack of sleep as they toss and turn throughout the night. Replaying the constant, agonizing torture that they endured, still fresh within their head.
Whumper - whether they feel like tending to whumpee's wounds or not - admiring their own handiwork; grabbing the whumpee by the jaw and tilting their head from side to side, inspecting their reddened, tender throat. They can't help but laugh at their misfortune in a cruel, condescending tone.
"Well would you look at that~ Now you have such a pretty, little throat~"
Physical injuries ranging from an itchy, scratchy sensation in the neck to raw burns and tissue damage after receiving a constant current of electricity.
Psychological trauma affects the whumpee as well; everytime they're reminded of the pain, their muscles involuntarily jolt, sending their body twitching and spasming, even spiraling them into a panic attack.
