If you're LGBT, there's a chance you have misgivings about straight allies. And I think that's fair. I'd like to share an experience from before I graduated, to show you that it probably doesn't hurt to take straight allies with a grain of salt: In my senior year of high school, I had a meeting with the career counselor about scholarships that I could apply to. I was pretty undecided about things, so there wasn't much to say on my end. I didn't really care, and I knew I probably wouldn't have the chops to get one anyway. So. She asks me about myself, trying to see if I was a minority. I'm white and DFAB, and I identified as a straight female at the time. Then we had this exchange: Her: Are you gay? Me: No... Her: Do you support gays? Me: Yes... Her: Oh, since you support gay rights, then you can try applying for a gay scholarship. (I'm paraphrasing, of course, but the meaning is the same) If I heard this now, I would've told her off. But I was a lot less confident back then, so I just sheepishly said I wasn't interested. Wow. Just, wow. What better way to show your support for LGBT youth then to take opportunities away from them? Incredible. jfc #the straights
