Day 168 - Shiro, Fire Emblem Fates

Today’s Autistic character of the day is:

Paralogue 7: Father and Liege

Ryoma and Takumi search for Ryoma’s son Shiro, who has left his Deeprealm after finding out Ryoma is the crown prince. A bandit named Tarba shows up and surrounds Shiro with a quite frankly ridiculous number of enemies.

So this map took me five attempts. It is the only chapter thus far that took more than one. I waited until Chapter 22 to play it, which made all of the enemies insanely strong. Which wasn’t a problem for me, but was a problem for Shiro, who was stuck unpromoted and kept dying before I could save him. It’s made worse by the fact that the entire map is desert and Shiro starts far away, surrounded by enemies. Not to say this map is hard, I just played it dumb and forgot I had a rescue staff.

Tarba, like many Paralogue bosses, is capturable. His last words when killed are “You haven’t seen the last of me!” which is supposed to be ironic, but ended up being literal when I captured him.

After the battle, Shiro yells at his father for never being around and keeping his destiny a secret. Shiro says that he only acted immature because he didn’t know he was going to be king and has a breakdown over being in a real battle, something Ryoma never prepared him for. Ryoma decides to take Shiro with him and train him to be a worthy ruler.

Shiro

Ryoma’s arrogant son. His personal skill, Noble Cause, boosts his damage dealt and taken when supporting an injured ally. His design is surprisingly generic for a prince, although I suppose that could tie into him not knowing his lineage. Personality-wise, he seems arrogant and a bit of a dick, although his horror over being in a real battle was nice.

Support: Ryoma/Shiro

C: Shiro asks Ryoma about his sword Ranjito. Ryoma says that it is a family heirloom that Shiro will inherit when he learns discipline. Shiro scoffs at this, saying that he's just as strong as his father. He also reveals that he became a Spear Fighter so he would have weapon triangle advantage over Ryoma.

B: Ryoma tells Shiro the various traits he'll need to be a good king.

A: Shiro shows Ryoma that he etched the words "Preparedness" and "Responsibility" on his arm guard as a reminder and swears he will become a good king. Ryoma praises him for growing up.

Review: A genuinely good Support that highlights that, despite his brashness, Shiro does want to become a good king and make his father proud.

Support: Shiro/Mother

C: Shiro asks his mother if Ryoma loves her.

B: Shiro's mother proves their love by showing her son all of the romantic letters Ryoma wrote over the years. Apparently, Ryoma is really sweet and eloquent in writing. The existence of these letters is very confusing if Shiro's mother is Felicia, Mozu, or some other woman who met Ryoma a few weeks prior and spent the entire time in the same army as him.

A: Shiro decides to write a love letter to his mother and make her a homecooked meal.

Review: Painfully bland.

Support: Corrin/Shiro

C: Corrin finds Shiro spearfishing. He feeds her.

B: After five consecutive meals of fish, Corrin politely declines more fish. Instead, she asks Shiro to spar with her.

A: Shiro tells Corrin he trains so hard so he can surpass his father.

S: Shiro beats Corrin in a duel, which forces him to admit he loves her. There isn't even a letter mention, which means Corrin is completely fine marrying her nephew. This game is filled to the brim with incest.

Review: The stuff about Ryoma in the A-Rank isn’t bad, but other than that this Support is fairly mediocre.

Support: Moron/Shiro

C: Shiro tells Corrin that he thinks hereditary monarchies sound old fashioned and that he doesn't feel qualified to be a king. In a rare moment of progressiveness, he tells Corrin that the leader should be the most qualified.

B: Shiro says that the leader shouldn't be someone with the right birthright. It should be the strongest person. Corrin points out that Shiro is advocating for Garon style might-makes-right, but Shiro points out that Corrin would probably prefer to fight alongside someone like Reina than someone inexperienced. A statement that's kinda ironic considering that Corrin, who is completely inexperienced, is the effective leader of the group. Shiro ends the Support by saying that Corrin should be the next king. Corrin tells Shiro to prove his strength-based leadership idea by dueling him.

A: Corrin wins, but leaves Shiro's royal claim in his hands, telling him that his worries about not being good enough will make him a good king.
