It’s now the Friday after the Monday when I got my gallbladder removed! Update: I’m healing up nicely. I’m a little disappointed that it hurts a smidge more today than yesterday, but then again, I’ve been fiddling with my pain pill dosages to try to get me off them quicker. This morning, back to the full amount, and a thorough shower to make sure everything’s squeaky clean around the incision. Just let the water flow over it, and pat it dry, they said.

I’ve now done so. The area all around my belly button is yellow! Not the bad kind of jaundice yellow, the boring “it’s just bruised” kind.

Throughout this, I don’t think I’ve expressed sufficient joy over the single-incision procedure! The surgeon told me, “Well, you’d need at least one incision big enough to remove the gallbladder through, so why not just make one incision in the belly button that’s big enough, and do everything through that one hole?” Which makes me wonder why anyone thought they needed more than one hole to begin with, but there you are.

See, if I’m given a choice between one stab wound or more than one, I’m foolish not to grab at the opportunity for one. Less pain. Less suturing/gluing to repair the cut. Less chance of infection. Quicker healing. Perhaps he’s a genius! He said he’d already done it about 250 times before he did it to me. Everything worked exactly how it should. Still got pictures. Still not going to show them to you. But the surgeon was able to point at a couple of spots on the picture and say, “See that bit there? That’s BAD. That thing needed to come out soon.” And obviously that’s gratifying. “I survived with a shit gallbladder for lord knows how long! I’m brave!”

But Rick! Have you done anything lately that was kinda stupid?

Well, since you asked, yesterday was kinda dumb. Yesterday was the first time I woke up and didn’t have pain in the forefront of my consciousness, and I didn’t feel sleepy and tired. So I spent the day doing some light housework, including laundry. Then I had a big ol’ greasy pizza for dinner! Then I woke up this morning with an unhappy tummy, go figure.

I keep wanting to rush this, I suppose. Partly because I’m a big dumb male, I suppose. The leave specialist at work is kind to me, but I can tell she’s thinking, “He could work if he had to! It’s just a call center job! The company NEEEEEDS him! He’s shirking! He’s lazy! What is this, Norway?” I just played a voicemail from my leave specialist, and called her back, and now I’m waiting for her to return my returning of her call. I’m a bit worried that she’s going to ask, “So, how you feeling? Feeling better? You sound okay. Why don’t you just go back to work on Monday instead of taking the second week? You feel okay enough for that, at least, surely? What say you go back to work on Monday? What are ya, a pussy? You a big pussy, then? Big pussy.”

I think I’m just going to go with the flow. I have another week off; I’m getting paid for it, thanks to short-term disability and my big, throbbing, tenure. Note to self: Use that time to continue healing, and possibly try to use some of it being creative. Do not waste any of it feeling guilty.
