LIVING BIG IN A TINY HOUSE

I’ve seen a few examples of shipping containers repurposed into homes but this has got to be the best so far. This young couple living in Victoria, Australia really took into consideration their immediate environment as well as the larger carbon footprint impressed upon the world, when designing their minimal but well thought out home.

One thing that always worries me about using these containers is how to make adjustments for the raw material. Steel is great for the skeletal beams used in supporting a building structure or for storing cargo goods being moved across long distances by land, air or sea but to house people inside these big metal boxes is a different matter altogether. Climate can be very unfavorable to steel, heating it up extensively in warmer conditions and keeping things uncomfortably frigid in colder environments. Again, these containers were designed for moving objects around, not staying put while living things shelter inside them. Often, inhabitants will have to offset the temperatures outside by installing cooling and heating systems in response. 

Richard and Amy, who utilized three 20ft steel shipping containers to connect into one another for a sleek exterior design, were as mindful of keeping things low energy as they were in preserving aesthetics. Cladding the containers on the outside to control the amount of heat that reaches the metal and insulating the interior to protect against the cold, the couple arrived at a Goldilocks Zone in which they don’t require air conditioning in summer, and get on well enough with just a wood burner in winter. They also collect their own rain water and have solar panels on their roof—Which while it’s not completely enough to be off the grid is the beginning of reaching that aim in the future.
