Quick Note & Policy Change
Afternoon, everybody!
I already talked about this on Twitter, so for those who saw it there, apologies for the repeat info and bear with me, please.
Everyone knows my mantra: Ship Without Shame. I believe that everybody has the right to like what they like (and dislike whatever they want). I also believe that -- when it comes to media sites / news -- sites set and determine the tone and message that decides the company you keep.
I don’t expect any media site to like everything I like. I don’t care if they do or don’t. Differences make the world go round. What I do take issue with is when a site (or podcast or round-table etc) decides to include “judgement” on viewers by commenting on the *viewer* not the fictional story/characters. There’s been a lot of that going around in the media circles lately and it’s left me debating adjusting the policies of my social media accounts.
Shippers are fans. Period. We like what we like and, just like fans of action or humor or comic books, our likes & preferences are as valid as anyone elses. We do not have to apologize for it or be “quiet” about it. Or “wait our turn.” We get to be as loud, passionate, visible, happy or unhappy as any other fan.
If there’s a hill I die on in battle, it will be in the defense of Romance and those who enjoy it. This is why I encourage shippers to never apologize for or explain their passions. Why I encourage you to be vocal and passionate about your hobbies and interests. You are as worthwhile, important, and “matter” as much as any other viewer, and don’t ever forget it. You need no one’s permission.
Hand in hand with that is an expectation that -- as a fan/viewer -- I feel like I am treated respectfully by the media sites I choose to visit. So, after sitting back and watching this hiatus, I’m adjusting my policy on my social media accounts.
Basically what it comes down to is this: I will no longer be sharing links to sites, round-tables, podcasts, etc., that I feel disrespect me (or you) as a shipper and fan of Romance.
IIn media, words are their business. It’s their job. Words and tone are purposeful choices. If a site chooses to use their platform to “shipper shame” (or click-bait, troll, or only try to appeal to me/Olicity/shippers when they need traffic or promotion) I am refusing to give them any of my business or promotion. I have enough respect for myself, my interests, and -- by extension -- the people who visit my Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, etc., to NOT support those sites.
I know that this will undoubtedly impact what it shared here when it comes to articles, interviews, promos, etc., and I apologize for that, but I have always felt a weird responsibility to my followers to ensure that what is shared/linked here adheres to the tone I want to create on my accounts, which is a fun, safe, positive (even if that does involve criticism that I do hope is always constructive) environment for Olicity shippers.
I feel a responsibility to meet the standard of “trust” you put in me when you followed me. I hope you understand my decision and my goal to only support media that truly reflects my interests and respects me (and you) as viewers and shippers.
Thank you.
