Perhaps you are thinking "I want to buy something from the New York Review Books sitewide sale that ends today, because I love bargains or whatever, but I can't decide which books to buy."
Probably you are not thinking that, actually. I don't know what you're thinking, I'm not you.
But just in case it's relevant, here are a few books available in NYRB editions that have my strong recommendation:
Sand
Warlock
Peach Blossom Paradise
The Hall of Uselessness
The first two especially – they are in the absolutely S-tier, top shelf, please-read-this category.
I am bloody SICK of the bad faith framing of things that actually happened irl when it can be used to demonise a minority on social media now (especially if it lionizes a member of the majority as part and parcel)
Case in point the faux outrage on uk social media right now of 'Oxford University student president CELEBRATED Charlie Kirk's MURDER - even though he'd met him recently!!!'
Charlie Kirk was frequently racist specifically against Black people. The student in question is Black. They had "met recently" at a political debate during which Kirk tried to spread the idea that minorities are inherently inferior morally and intellectually to white heterosexual Christian people. Kirk had insulted every Black person in the room to their faces.
Charlie Kirk died in an ironic way, being shot at a school by a member of the public, after being a lifelong supporter of public gun ownership even if it led to school shootings. The student in question, on his own private social media, to his own friends only posted that this was amusing.
This is being portrayed as if the student had some kind of public celebration party at the University!
Firstly that didn't happen.
Secondly, EVEN IF IT DID, the UK is a country that celebrated the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, by mass-buying the song 'Ding Dong the Witch is Dead'.
The UK is a country that annually, celebrates Guy Fawkes night - the execution of a man who wished to overthrow the British Parliament.
And yet people in the UK are acting as if the idea that a Black person - or anyone who is anti racism - could be happy about one less racist in the world is beyond the pale suddenly?
Fuck that noise.
