10 Years
Ten years. Well, almost. Nearly three years captive, five years lost to nothingness, close to two years in hiding. Those first few years were bad and... complicated. He'd rather not think about then. The next five, well, he was busy being nonexistent. It was sad to see how easily the world moved on without him- how unimportant he was in the grand scheme of anything. The next couple of years were in self-imposed isolation, in a mixture of deep loneliness and fear. The fake life he had spun for himself had been as fitting for him as a suit that was several sizes too small and required him to keep everyone at a distance... But it also kept him safe. And that was... it wasn't fine, but it would have to do.
Then the vision happened.
Things like that had the power to change ones opinions on the importance of things. Seeing... that, well. Micah Warren wasn't the type of guy not to speak up when he saw thing wrong, something that could be changed or stopped. Or, at least, he used to be. Perhaps he could be that person again.
He stared at the numbers on the screen of his burner phone. It should be easy. Just hit the green button. Simple. Easiest thing in the world. Of course, he would likely blow up his secret life if someone was actually looking for him still and... She'll probably be angry he didn't contact her sooner. He wouldn't blame her for whatever negative reaction she might have. He would probably deserve it.
Emotions weren't actually important right now however, especially his. Lives were. And... he had started his life over before, it should be easier now that he had the practice of it. Should be easy, right?
So why was he hesitating?
It will ring through to voice mail anyways, even if it was still her number. People change numbers all the time and it was also normal to let an unknown number to go to voice mail. Too many weirdos, scammers and bots out there.
His finger hovered over the button. "Just do it, coward." Micah hissed at himself through clenched teeth.
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath and pressed dial.
The phone rang.
