@shetorn didn’t techinically ask for this but then she kinda did
bare lace socks squished into the plush white carpet of her bedroom. with a glad-to-be-home sigh, jane trailed her wheeled suitcase to the edge of her bed, then returned her shoes—which she had removed at the front door and now held in her hand—to the shoe shelf in her closet. the school year was over, new students had all been received, and it was finally time to be home for a few months ( before her senior year started in autumn—oh boy ). home-home, cinderellasburg-home, where less time was spent throughout the year than second-home auradon prep, as much as she loved her hometown.
ruffled comforter welcomed jane as she dropped to her bed, eyes closing for only a minute before she sat up again, stuck between the not-wanting-to-move of post-travel and the constant restlessness of the busy bee state she’d grown used to being in. she could unpack, but she didn’t really want to do that immediately, so that would come later. after dinner at the earliest, if not as late as tomorrow. either way, certainly not right now.
actually, maybe a nap would be nice after all. there was no running around to be done, no bee-busy errands to attend to. she deserved some sleep. mom would wake her up for dinner. just a short little nap. decided, she slid off her bracelets and rings and set them on her bedside table, next to a photograph of herself and audrey.
audrey. weren’t they once the best of friends, before growing up got in the way ? way back when, in this framed sliver of a moment frozen in time, seven- or eight-year-old jane stared bashfully up at the camera as she held a brush to a smiling audrey’s hair, pink and cornflower dresses complimenting each other in pastel harmony. but something had happened between then and now; some drift had manifested and best friends were only friends. an unpleasant feeling filled jane’s chest at the stark realization. when had that happened ? sure, they hadn’t had a sleepover in a while, and they each always seemed a little busy with this or that to hang out as often, but that didn’t mean they weren’t best friends anymore . . . right ?
if she had any say, jane would want the space between them to close again. not to barge in on audrey’s life or anything, but she missed how things used to be. so after a series of writing texts and deleting them, deeming them not quite good enough to send, jane’s phone whooshed as one finally made the cut.
[ audrey ✨ ]: hey ! you probably haven’t been home for very long, and it’s kind of a day trip between us, but would you want to have a sleepover sometime ? i was thinking maybe this week or something, if you want ? i know it’s kind of silly, but for old times’ sake, you know ? ❤️
