Are shells programmed in a way that can be stopped? If so, how can I stop a shell program from running and prevent it from being triggered again?
Shells are usually alters. Here’s some information:
Shell Alters-Hide alters from being discovered by outside individuals who are not allowed to be aware of that alter of the system. Shell alters prevent therapists from talking to other alters about what has occurred.
A shell alter part which handles daily life and is designed to hide the existence of other alters from the outside world. They ensure that the parts inside of them behave in like the person's daily personality so as to not reveal individual parts that may act differently.
They are like shells where the parts that deal with daily life can go inside of them. The parts that go into the shells may change often depending on stress levels in daily life, or it may change depending on what skills the parts have, but the shell parts remain the same.
As a child, they assist with concealing the abuse. This allows the survivor to behave consistently and function in everyday life without showing the effects of the abuse.
This allows protection for the abusers as they will not get caught as easily if the child behaves consistently and as if nothing is wrong.
It's an alter with no clear personality, one that is easily overridden with an alters personality traits and feelings while still being technically cocon. A shell is more common in OSDD than DID.
Type 2 Shell Alter- An alter through which other alters can present in a hand-in-glove fashion that serves to maintain an appearance of constancy to the external world and a continuous short-term memory for the individual, minimising the sense of time loss; usually has no developed personality of its own but reflects the personality and perspectives of the part filling it at any given time.
