Chara was a child who ran up a mountain for "not a very happy reason." Chara was a child who "hated humanity" and avoided saying exactly why. Chara who decided to poison themself and suffer an excruciating death to help monsters.

its not hard to put the pieces together that Chara was abused and traumatized. Developed a loathing for their abusers by extension humans, and then the first people who ever showed kindness to them were monsters, which were banished by HUMANS. Not to mention the streak of self harm by their "not very happy reason" and them deliberately poisoning themself. And then this abused child with unresolved trauma goes to the surface and see humans once again trying to hurt not just them but Asriel too, their closest friend, likely one of the first people in the entire world who showed them kindness. Of course they would completely lose it. See red. Want to lash out at their full power. Knows that they are not just a little weak kid anymore. Knows that finally, they can fight back. Can finally get revenge, even if these humans are not at all associated with what happened to them in the past. But of course, we know how this story ends. Asriel fights against them. They lose.

People forget that in the first game Snake frankly did NOT like Otacon. He found his story of "accidentally" contributing to making metal gear ridiculous, he flails him around when frustrated, and its repeatedly shown how impatient and dismissive Snake is of Otacon ("I dont need you. I just need your brain", Otacon telling he's a changed man only for Snake to respond, "Whatever, all I want from you is information") Snake is mean to Otacon especially in their first cutscenes together, and part of that is legitimate distrust in scientist figures given his previous encounters with them (Pettrovich from mg2) and part from his usual aloofness and singleminded goal of getting his mission over with.

But it is over the course of the story that Otacon comes to understand more about Snake, and in turn Snake learns about Otacon and comes to trust him with his help throughout the story. Hell, even the stupid bottle of ketchup he initially throttled around Otacon for bringing actually can be used to escape the jail cell. Eventually by the end Otacon is willing to either stay behind to ensure Meryl and Snake are safe or himself goes alongside Snake. In the Meryl ending Otacon promises to stay behind to allow Snake to live and Snake, even knowing the odds of Otacon's survival are hopeless, tell him to "not die on me." In the Otacon ending, it is him who manages to stir Snake to keep going even after Meryl's death, and joins him to live out their lives together.
