You know, I could have sworn that when the 2005 April Fool's voting happened, I preferred Sharkaw but Varwolf was an option instead, so I had to vote for my second-favorite.
But that's untrue. Going to the voting page now shows:
That's clearly the Sharkaw. So either that page changed (extremely unlikely) or my memory is off.
What this actually shows is that my taste has changed. I remember being disappointed that my favorite sabertooth creature wasn't an option so I had to vote for the other one. I like the Sharkaw better NOW, so my memory says that the Varwolf was up for voting, even though it was the opposite.
I believe I didn't like the Sharkaw as much at the time because 10-year-old me didn't think it was cute enough, while the Varwolf was the perfect blend of cute and wolf. I mean, it's a sabertooth Cybunny wolf, and Cybunnys were my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE pets at the time.
Now, I appreciate sharper "cool" designs more than I used to, which I would have brushed off as "for boys" when I was 10. The Sharkaw has this whole sleek look to its head, the way the dark part swoops up into the slightly-curled ears, and that the eyes have that bold upper lid that makes it look fierce yet also feminine.
All that said, I'm certainly not disappointed the Varwolf is coming! It was my favorite then, and I still love it now. I hope there won't have been too many design changes to it - I see a lot of people wanting it to be less Lupe-like, but I don't see how it could be any more appealing by taking that away. Maybe giving it more texture? I don't know.
It mainly needs to have to ruff, have the teeth, and have the general dog/cat body to be the pet I wanted. But really, not changing it at all aside from maybe its pose would be best for me. I was horrified when I saw the Gnorbu since that's not what was voted in. I didn't like the Lamameeah either, but the idea that my preferred pet would have been completely altered if it had won made me glad it didn't.
