On this day in 1963, the epic “Cleopatra” directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz was released! A costume sketch for Elizabeth Taylor in the title role, designed by the great Irene Sharaff. The film achieved notoriety during its production for its massive cost overruns and production troubles, which included changes in director and cast, a change of filming locale, sets that had to be constructed twice, lack of a firm shooting script, and personal scandal around co-stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. It was the most expensive film ever made up to that point and almost bankrupted 20th Century Fox.
I believe these photographs define the many different times and stages of my romantic relationship with my camera, (now iPhone too) my many different subjects and photography. From precocious "liking" to mellow awareness to bursts of excitement & dynamic growth, to "seeing" what's in my field of vision, to understanding a composition, and, hopefully someday, yes, too, what's truly beyond the borders of lenses and shutters . These photographs mark my transformation. Evolution? Sometimes grinding, other times striking. Some are merely for fun. Others are, captured because what is within the frame some is interesting. Interesting to me of course. Every encounter between myself, my camera and subjects offer better understanding of the beauty of photography's multi-faceted layers. It never fails to awe, amaze and surprise me. I strive to understand the better of it. But like peeling layers it is not easy. Framing the "moment" is everything, which is not simple, I learn as I go along the mile. These photos very much set the foundations and, like I said, the definitions of myself as a photographer - of where I came from, at what stage I am at & where I am headed with this intercourse. The outlook and point of view of this world we live in now, I owe to the medium, be it a Pro level Full Frame DSLR or an iPhone. I look around and I see a whole array of possibilities. Plenty of rich, exciting & promising possibilities! Question is, do I get "that moment" and "how". And, from my eyes to yours, these are my wondering, which I am happy to share them all with you!
