Celebrating their 20th year as a band, the Damage tour brought Arizona-based group Jimmy Eat World to the Crystal Ballroom on July 16th. With eight studio albums, three live albums, one compilation album and more, Jim Adkins and Co. had ample material to fill their set. However, with twenty years of music comes a challenge: keeping the entire crowd engaged.
At every concert there are the fans who only know the singles, with this show being no exception. There were the early Jimmy Eat World fans, boasting original T-shirts from their 1994 debut album. Then there were the Futures (2004) fans that attached themselves to the harder sounds of songs such as âPain,â and finally the newest fans, drawn to the maturity of Damage. Because their fan base was so varied, when the band first started playing there always seemed to be a third of the crowd that wasnât rocking out as hard as the rest.
The crowd dynamic was a little strange to begin with as it was over 90 degrees with humidity -- never a good combination at the Crystal --making people hesitant to pack in like sardines. Opening were Brooklynâs X Ambassadors, a more melodic version of Linkin Park mixed with pop elements, who just finished touring with Imagine Dragons. A testament to the liveliness of the performance, there was not one person that did not leave dripping in sweat. This was attributed mostly in part to the jumping, dancing, and moshing that quickly became the standard behavior once Jimmy Eat World took the stage, especially during âBig Casino,â âA Praise Chorus,â âSweetnessâ and several other hits. No one was sweatier than the front man, Jim Adkins, himself with sweat splashing the crowd with every jump and head bang (Think dog shaking off after jumping in the pool).
A surprising highlight was when they played a cover of Taylor Swiftâs âWe Are Never Getting Back Together.â They rocked it harder than the country pop princess could have, making it into an incredible listening experience. A controversial statement Iâm sure, but personally, I can actually listen to this version.
There was one other moment that caused a shiver to run down my spine and goose bumps to form. Experiencing the emotional piece âHear You Meâ was like an out of body experience. As the music faded and Jim Adkins crooned âA song for a heart so big, God wouldnât let it live,â the entire crowd joined in louder than before. Hearing the crowd belt the lyrics to a song that clearly means so much to Jimmy Eat World (written about a dear friend that passed away) created a palpable spiritual connection in the room. Jimmy Eat World fittingly began the show with their latest single, âI Will Steal You Backâ and ended it with their biggest hit, âThe Middle.â
