Spirit's Eve - Cat and Mouse
You and Shane take Jas and Vincent trick-or-treating for Spirit's Eve, but their buddy costume doesn't quite work out as planned...
-----------------------------------------
“No, Shane, pepper poppers aren’t candy. You can’t give them to children. They want sugar,” you laugh, giving him a quick peck on the cheek. He scowls for a moment, but it turns into the gentle smile you’ve come to know and love. It was a bad joke, he knows, but a joke nonetheless. Â
“We should head over to Marnie’s soon to pick up Jas,” he mentions, wiping your kiss off his cheek with a mock-disgusted expression. “I bet she’s been ready for hours.” He chuckles, a low, quiet sound that somehow walks the line between non-existence and filling the entire room. It’s enchanting, and it happens so rarely. It’s one of the reasons you fell in love with him. Â
“Right.” It’s not too much longer before it’ll start getting dark, and while Marnie has no issue letting Jas stay out late on festival nights, you have no desire to start any fights with the woman who keeps your farm running smoothly. You give Shane another kiss, a quick peck on the lips this time, and lead him out of the house. Â
It’s a nice night out. Chilly, but not uncomfortably cold. The sort of weather that’s undeniably associated with Spirit’s Eve. The two of you enjoy a quiet, though uneventful, walk to Marnie’s ranch. The smell of Cindersap’s pines permeates the air and the crunch of dead leaves beneath your feet, combined with the crisp air, reenergizes you after a long day of work. Anyone else would feel compelled to fill the silence with meaningless chatter. Not Shane, though. He’s one of the few people who appreciates silence, and you’ve always appreciated that about him. Â
Jas and Marnie are already waiting outside when you arrive. “Uncle Shane!” the girl calls out, running towards him with a huge grin on her face. She’s traded her usual pink dress for a black one, and is wearing cat ears in place of her usual hair bow. She’s also painted whiskers on her cheeks. It’s probably one of the most adorable things you’ve seen in a while. Shane lifts her up easily and spins her around, a grin quickly replacing his typical expression. You’ve never seen anyone make him as happy as Jas does, and that makes you happy. Â
“Jas!” He gives her a quick kiss on the head before setting her down. “A kitty, huh? Good choice. Did you help Aunt Marnie catch mice around the barn today?” Jas blushes a little, looking down at her feet, looks back up at her godfather with a large grin, nods, then meows. Â
“Vincent’s s’pposed to be a mouse,” she explains, reaching up to grab his hand and lead him towards the town square. “We planned it weeks ago. Miss Penny helped us make the costumes!” Â
Marnie and Shane both laugh, and she holds out a bag for Jas to take. “Don’t you need something for your candy, little kitty? Or were you going to carry it all in your paws?” Jas blushes again and takes the bag from her, then goes back to tugging on Shane’s hand. It doesn’t take much coaxing to get him moving, and you follow along after them. “Don’t stay out too late!” Marnie calls after you. Â
The first stop is Vincent’s house, and he’s also waiting outside with Sam. You’d half expected to see Kent out there with them, given his recent return, but you don’t see him, and you have no intention of prying. You do, however, notice that Vincent is also wearing all black, cat ears, and whiskers. Before you have time to say anything, Jas is already on the case. Â
“Vincent!” Her tone is somewhere between a reprimand and a whine, the way only a child can manage. “You were supposed to be a mouse! We had the costume finished and everything! Miss Penny helped you make the ears, remember?”Â
“They didn’t look good,” he answers with a bit of a frown. “My big brother helped me make these instead. Besides, why do youget to be the cat? I want to be the cat!” Vincent holds Sam’s hand as if for protection. Jas may seem sweet, but she can be scary, and no one knows that better than he does. You watch the exchange for a bit, unsure of exactly what to do. Dealing with children wasn’t ever really your forte. Â
Finally, once Vincent looks like he might start to cry and Jas looks like she might soon be a red cat rather than a black one, you manage to come up with a solution. “You can both be cats, you know,” you suggest, softly at first in case the idea is rejected. Vincent seems pleased with this and his expression immediately turns back into a grin. Â
Jas, on the other hand, doesn’t quite seem sold. “He said he would be the mouse,” she insists, very nearly stamping her little foot. You turn to Vincent, crouching down a bit to be more on his level. Â
“You said you and Miss Penny made mouse ears in class, right?” you ask, another genius plan forming. “Do you still have them?” Vincent nods slowly, a bit unsure of whatever it is you might be about to suggest. “Can you go get them for me?” He agrees, and runs inside to grab his mouse ears. Â
They’re not exactly well-made, but you can tell what they’re supposed to be, and that’s what’s important. You thank him for the ears and before Shane can protest, put them on his head with a grin. “There,” you say to Jas, now there’s two cats and a giant mouse.” She seems pleased with this solution. Shane does not. Â
“Yay! Uncle Shane’s trick-or-treating with us!” she exclaims happily, clapping excitedly.Â
“You know, if you really don’t want to, I can wear the mouse ears,” Sam offers with a chuckle. “It’s not a big deal.”Â
Not one to be shown up by anyone else, and especially not one to let Jas down, Shane shakes his head. “I think I make a pretty good mouse,” he laughs. Â
