Eternal War: Back to the future with that sweet 90's vibe
If the thought 'Hey, where's all them new ghc bands at?" has ever crossed your mind, well fuck you, because Eternal War is delivering blast-from-the-past 90's metal grooves, and drum tracks so superb they'll melt your eyeballs.
Eternal War made their debut at the end of August in Shadow Central in support of Hollow Truth and Kingpin, and despite being the underdogs of that show, rose to sit with the big boys by the end of their set. Neil's aggresive vocals signify impending doom for the pit, accompanied by sick instrumentation from all around, (Dem Drums THO), was the perfect formula for the nicest head-banging, fist throwing, wain-whacking tracks for some time.
I caught up with Connor Neil, vocalist of this new breed, and asked him some questions that have been hot on my mind.
Me: So Connor, your new band Eternal War played for the first time back at the end of August with Hollow Truth and Kingpin. How did you guys feel it went for your emergence performance?
Connor: Yeah man, that show ruled. I was incredibly nervous before our set as I had no idea of how our stuff was going to go down with the crowd but I feel it went really well, we had some slight hiccups in one song but apart from that we did better than I thought we would. The nice words from a number of people after our set was also good, put my mind at ease.
Me: As you said, you had massive support from the crowd, both during and after your set, despite nobody hearing anything from you before, how did that make you guys feel?
Connor: it made us feel really excited for the future of our band, a couple of us before have been in bands that have flopped so I guess could you say we were hoping that it wouldn't be the case with Eternal War. I hope that we can win over more people and play more shows in and out of Scotland, just got to see what the future holds.
Me: And we wish you all the best! Before we go on, how would you describe your sound to those who were unfortunate to not see you play? Your grooves have been compared to the likes of Code Orange, All Out War and Expire!
Connor: I'd say we're taking influences from a bunch of bands we really enjoy, one of our guitarists Martin is aiming to have a mixture of bands like Merauder, All out war, and Machine Head. I'd say we have a sort of 90's era metalcore sound with hardcore influences also. It's a bit confusing but it all comes together.
Me: What kind of sounds were the biggest influences for you guys, from forming the band to getting down and writing tracks?
Connor: Martin & I wanted to start a new band with the early old metalcore sound. We got some of our mates who also liked that style and got down to it. So I guess the bigger Influences would be All Out War & Earth Crisis that started the band, I admit we swayed from that a bit but we're happy with the results.
Me: Do you feel that you guys’ previous experience with bands, such as yourself with Drowned Out, has made you go about things differently? If so, what?
Connor: I wouldn't say differently, but I guess you can say we are more focused on writing and being a lot more technical than previous bands. Whilst still doing it for fun and enjoyment, we are still taking it seriously.
Me: You have your debut material coming up later this year; can you give us any details on that?
Connor: Yeah man, we are currently finishing up the songs for our debut release. It'll be a four track ep named "Plague of the Mind". It includes the songs we played at our first show plus another which we finished up writing not long ago. We plan to record within the next month and hopefully have it out before our next show on December 6th.
Me: We’ll be waiting patiently, until then thank you for your time!
Connor: Thanks man, we appreciate it!
I wish Connor and the rest of the boys in Eternal War the best of luck. The energy and enthusiasm from their first show captivated all and has left the fortunate few who saw their emergence foaming at the mouth for more. Unfortunately I'm unable to write more about their sound because at the time I was standing with my mouth open and my tongue lolling out, but trust me; It's good.
Catch Eternal War's EP 'Plague of the Mind' when it drops and see the bangers live on December 6th at the TFN x Shadowsound Beatdown Bonanza.
