2.5.3: The Nanny
It was time to meet Ramona’s friend, Norah, and decide if she would be a good fit as a nanny for our family. She would just be coming over in the evenings to help with the younger kids while Paul cooks dinner and takes care of things around the house, but we were still nervous about having a stranger in the house.
We answer the door and she introduces herself.
“Hi, I’m Norah.”
“Hi Norah,” I say. “I’m Johnny, and this is my husband, Paul. It’s nice to meet you.”
“It’s lovely to meet you as well!”
“So, have a seat.” Paul gestures to the couch. “Ramona says you have a lot of experience with kids.”
“I do. I’ve been a nanny for a few years now, but the family doesn’t really need help anymore now that the kids are getting older.”
“That makes sense,” I say. “Would you mind if we asked for their contact information? We’d love to talk with them, just for the sake of a reference.”
“Not at all! They really want to help me find another job before I have to leave them.”
“That’s good! So, what kind of things do you do as a nanny?” Paul asks. “Aside from Ramona babysitting on occasion, we’re new to the whole nanny thing.”
“Well, I’m big on play. I’m an imaginative person, and the kids I take care of love to play pretend. Sometimes we go on nature walks or to the park.”
“That sounds perfect!” I tell her. “We live pretty close to the splash pad. Would you be willing to take the girls there sometimes?”
“Sure, I love the splash pad!”
We chat some more about stuff like certifications and pay expectations and then it’s time for Norah to leave. Paul and I both agree that she seems great, but we’ll have to check her references before we make a decision either way.
