this is a thought that stems more from having rewatched season one than where i am right now but: maryse and robert keeping their involvement in the circle from their children becomes even more brutal when you realize how much it affected alec and izzy as people.
i think it’s fairly standard to headcanon that alec and izzy were pretty isolated growing up. not to the degree jace was in the first ten years of his life but in the entire show, we only learn of ONE real friend they’ve had that’s part of the shadowhunter community and not in their family. and alec notes that “it’s been years” since they’ve seen aline when the audience meets her in season two.
it’s not hard to imagine that other shadowhunter children were warned away from getting to know the lightwood children, that even if their parents didn’t explain to them why they were bad news (which some probably did), they made sure to impress that they were.
this is more conjecture than anything but i personally headcanon that alec and izzy spent their entire childhoods in new york—meaning they didn’t go to the academy in idris. they likely thought their parents had made this request so that they could build their own lessons for their children’s tutelage under hodge. but in reality, it’s punishment for the lightwood line.
and all of this might seem like it’s really reading into things and maybe it is—but it’s not hard to see how it might have affected them in the show itself if true? like.
izzy’s clearly an outlying shadowhunter when it comes to willingly and regularly socializing with downworlders. it’s so easy for me to imagine her being very lonely and very angry and very defiant as a young teen and deciding, ‘fine, then, you don’t want me? i can make friends elsewhere’ and never really looking back.
whereas alec is so obviously Not Interested in making friends at all at the start of the show and only really seems to hang with his siblings. i really do think he almost took an opposite approach to izzy, he folded in on himself, drew back, and said ‘friends who? i don’t need friends, i’ve got my family, that’s all i need’
which leads to my other long-standing headcanon that the lightwood siblings are actually considered pretty Weird for being so close. shadowhunters are supposed to care about family loyalty and honor and tradition, but they’re not supposed to be Friends; and they’re always supposed to choose the mission and the clave before each other.
Ask game: gimme them Watson thoughts!
one aspect about them i love: WHAT DON'T I LOVE ABOUT THIS MAN?HE IS KIND, HE IS GENTLE, HE IS OPEN TO RETHINKING HIS POSITIONS AND CHANGING HIS OPINION, HE IS INTELLIGENT and god. To not make this long, ask to Sherlock Holmes, he will give you a free talk of 3 hours or more.
one aspect i wish more people understood about them:
His sassy bitch side, the judging side (we accept that this boy would have been a bully with Holmes at school) or how impulsive and reckless he is sometimes. I don't have so many complaints because the queer side of the fandom is 10/10 but sometimes they tend to put it on being more cautious and careful and the one who corrects and scolds Holmes in that regard and they forget about these details.
It's like Ok he does it sometimes but it's a level thing really because Holmes is a very high level of recklessness but you leave Watson alone and without that concern and well you have him getting into a hiding place with a gun in a total stranger in the middle from the paramo or going to complain to a guy who may or may not have kidnapped a woman hehehe (?
Now for the entire fandom and special emphasis on the non-queer side: MY GOD MY BOY IS NOT STUPID, I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW YOU GOT THAT CONCLUSION GRRRRR
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character: Wow, the list is long. As it has little that I draw him, I will say that I like to imagine him having moles. I think he was shot 2 times, one in the war and the other was in London, bisexual king and nobody will change my mind, that Watson wrote for all kinds of genres but anonymously, I have a lot to say about his family (I think so I did in another post), loves astronomy, his song is rootles de marina and I really try to stop, but I'm very talkative. Help.
one character i love seeing them interact with: I love seeing him with Holmes, I also like his active interact with certain clients :)
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more: It's terrible that I have to say this because well she was his wife but Mary, I definitely wanted more of those two lovebirds. Also his brother.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character:
With Holmes, we have a long, very long list, and based on many perspectives (friendship-lovers-unilateral-platonic love), depending on the day, so an endless list, mmm, so it comes to my mind quickly, I like the idea that Holmes has composed many songs for Watson, maybe I could make a series of posts about them.
With Mary I quite like the idea that they are both very open about their family traumas and went to the countryside every weekend when they could and wanted to live in the sea when they grew old. :)

Guilty pleasure: Personally I don't like and I don't see any sense in the idea of Watson getting married multiple times. It's not in my canon vision, Mary was the only one for me because I'm a dumb romantic but from time to time I like to imagine ocs being his wives with their own backstories and complex relationships.
The Watsons are a tragedy to me. And I have taken in my head some small but radical ideas:
Their mother abandoned them. A little or a lot because of his father and things don't end there, the figure of the father before he disappeared is still vague for me so I change it as I see fit but I think his absence is important. He is not a man who would physically leave them and he may have been hunting them like a shadow but I don't feel like he was very present in their lives or not directly. Which causes Watson to cling to his brother. And even more so that his brother ends up taking care of him and raising him in a certain way.
What I perceive in my hcs for Henry Watson is a paternalized child, who had artistic aspirations (he plays the piano and several instruments), his own dreams and desires but due to gross negligence he had to replace his father in his duties. And while our John seems to be heading towards a bright future, Henry go under
As Watson stopped needing him he didn't know who he was and I think alcohol was his easy consolation. Someone who left everything for his little brother to have. Ugly but it makes a certain sense to me and I think that's where Watson's anxiety due to impotence and even guilt of not being able to help him. Not only was he fond of him but he believed that he should have done something else, because he was in debt.
Also that John did not know how to deal with an addict and contributed to the beginning to destroy the situation. I like the idea of Watson having a change after the war and I feel before the war he would not have had the patience and control over his temper that he had by the time he meets Holmes.
A more impulsive John, who falls into a vicious circle of reproaches and fights with his older brother. He may even call him bad things because he doesn't understand how his brother can do that to himself. And he doesn't appreciate his support either.
Many consider the war Watson's breaking point and I don't argue with the idea, but in his past, more than the horror of being in the desert, I'm interested in what took him to that awful place. And although I do believe that part of his naivety influenced his decision, his spite and desire to run away also influenced him.
I have this clear vision of John telling Henry that he won't put up with this situation anymore and walking away, far away. Making the worst decision of his life; leave Henry alone when he needed him most and go to hell on his own.
After seeing my old hcs about the Holmes family I have realized that this is where my ideas have changed the most.
I like that idea of his father being a lawyer or someone involved in the justice system—in a similar position. There is something adorable about little Holmes discovering from a young age more or less how these concepts work and a certain shock between his father following a more rigid morality and him beginning to notice the shades of gray moral. 🤔
With her mother I have a couple of adorable ideas about her taking him to the theater and her being the one to motivate his musical side. She is probably the one who instills his love of flowers and God (unlike other people I don't think Holmes is an atheist. He is certainly not your typical Christian but he believes in a superior force and has a certain respect for providence) They can get along, but in the end I think as Holmes grows he realizes that his parents are not the support he needs nor could they understand him.
Because they do not know or want deep down to learn how to deal with this young neurodivergent. They love him but I think at the same time they hurt him without realizing it. Especially in school matters there are certain conflicts because I think Holmes is brilliant when he learns in his own way and he probably had a thousand tutors before he found one that really suited his needs and if he did go to school or something, I think it was a terrible student and received several scoldings and punishments for it.
Anyway, then between his parents and him there is this disconnection. Mycroft on the other hand, this I say it before and I say it now: is a matter of personalities. They actually love each other very much and get along quite well. They support each other and have a deep bond, they just don't have the character to be that expressive or affectionate. Nor do they feel the need to keep an eye on each other because they trust each other's abilities.
In addition to Mycroft's political career, I feel if he could have had a connection with his father to some extent.
And also personally I think Mycroft hide so much of his true self until he was away from home and in steady employment. Founding something like the diogenes club seemed very daring to me in its form and I think it says a lot about his need to create for himself a space that would fit his needs but with a certain declaration of power very "I can make a club like this and no one can't stop me."
Returning to Holmes. Here the matter varied a bit according to their sexuality or identity but this feature deserves its own post so I will go to sexualities.
With a Holmes aro/ace, I think there is an isolation of understanding with everyone around he. Including Watson for several years (I love him but he has everything to be ugly acephobic at the beginning but one of his great virtues is that he learns and changes his mind once things are explained to him).
With a Holmes romantically or sexually attracted to men, I think. there is a forced coming out that makes him have to break ties with his parents and I have always believed that Trevor was undoubtedly his first partner or crush. Here could enter his cousin Vernet and oh god this is so long.
Sorry. Im going to shut up.
