I'm back from my trip to San Francisco to attend the SGCI Printmaker's Conference! It was a big, intense conference. So many printmakers! I was a little overwhelmed at times.
The Conference's HQ was at the Embarcadero Hyatt, but many events took place at college printmaking departments all over the bay area. I spent a lot of time on buses getting to and from the various satellite locations. Each location had a number of printmaking shows, and the quality of the work on display made me feel a little like a hack! However, I was less impressed with the panel selection at SGCI; there weren't very many and I only one was able to attend was terrible. I had more fun at the Open Portfolio Session and the Vendor's Fair. Overall, I prefer the College Book Arts Association conference for a variety of reasons (the smaller size, quality of panels and speakers, the relevance to my work, the community). I still had a great time at SGCI!

Highlight from the Mission Art Walk in San Fran: Saw some amazing screen prints at the Solo Mujeres Exhibition at Mission Graphica. Photos of work by Melanie Cervantes and Ester Hernandez. I am kind of obsessed with the Melanie Cervantes pieces. Sorry for the terrible photos…the glass was very reflective. We also got to tour the printmaking studio where the magic happens. It was a great experience.

"Rhythmic Structures" Demo at Academy of Art University. Shannon Lee Collis created audible prints by rigging these turn tables to play screen printed "records." Instead of a needle, the arm of the record player is fitted with copper wiring which, when it makes contact with the copper paint on the disc, triggers a mechanism that strikes a drum or plucks the strings of an instrument. Guests were invited to print their own disc and listen to the sweet sounds of printmaking by giving it a spin on one of the turntables. My understanding of the technical stuff is shaky, to say the least, but it was really exciting to see (and hear!) printmaking come alive in a new way.
