At The Engagement Party
Narcissa was walking back from the powder room. The engagement party was moving along nicely. She was about to turn the corner when her fiance’s voice made her pause.
Lucius: I still don’t understand father, why do I have to marry her?
The infamous Malfoy sneer rang clear through when he said the last word for his sentence.
Abraxas: I told you already, the deal was you that you were to marry the second daughter of the House of Black, however, the second born was disowned so now you have to marry Narcissa.
Abraxas Malfoy glared at his son.
Abraxas: I am not seeing the problem or why you are complaining. You have a pureblood wife, you should be happy.
Lucius: Easy for you to say, you won’t have to sleep with the cow.
Abraxas: Lucius! Keep your voice down!
Lucius: Shouldn’t we try to be improving the Malfoy line? Not muddying it up with someone who doesn’t care what they look like?
Lucius: I mean how else would you explain why she’s so fa-
A loud smack resonated through the hallway.
Lucius: Father what was tha-
Abraxas: Now you listen hear boy. I don’t care if you don’t like the look of her. You’re going to marry her and that final. Once you get that girl pregnant, you can sleep with whatever slut you want. Just get her pregnant and do your duty. Do you understand?
Lucius: Yes father.
Narcissa heard a step of footsteps start walking to the other end of the corridor. When the man’s footsteps could no longer be heard the was a voice that spoke in a whisper.
Lucius: She’s still fat though.
Lucius followed his father back to the party.
Narcissa turned to see Severus Snape, the boy who followed Lucius around while in Hogwarts, was standing right next to her. Thankful that she had not started crying, Narcissa did her best to put on the famous House of Black expression and even her voice.
At this Narcissa lost her composure.
Narcissa: How would you know? He’s your best friend, isn’t he?
“You get used to it,” he said. But that doesn’t make it right. For years marriage had been Narcissa’s goal, it was her dream. She knew she would never marry for love, but a marriage meant she could escape this place and its horrors. But Severus had unknowingly made it abundantly clear that she was replacing one kind of abuse for another. At least this one didn’t leave bruises that were visible and hopefully would happen less often.
Narcissa: Thank you Severus, it’s nice to know that I will be seeing at least one kind face at Malfoy Manor.
