[ It felt like Halloween had barely just finished (and God knows he was still finding sweet wrappers up and down the house left right and centre from Sam's trick or treating rounds around the neighbourhood --- no thanks to Aunty Caroline who had enlisted the family of three with enough confectionery to last the best of three months under normal conditions) and yet already the festive season was here, drawing colder nights and shorter days along with it. Often he'd found himself in recent weeks passed browsing through Christmas catalogues in the spare time a decade ago he'd have dedicated towards a visit to the local bar, trying to abide by the hints his son subtly dropped into the conversation every now and then to the best of his ability. After all, before Sammy had become part of their lives the only other person he'd ever had to provide gifts for at Christmas was the man he now shared a child with, and even then, back in the days of their childhood presents were nothing of the worth they were now. A kiss on the forehead just before bed and a day allocated entirely to big bro-little bro bonding didn't seem to make the cut in the present day. ]
