A fiefdom originally referred to an estate of land, an office, or a right granted by a lord to a vassal in medieval Europe, in exchange for loyalty and service. Today, the term is commonly used metaphorically to describe any business, organization, or territory dominated by a single person or group. [1, 2, 3, 4] Historical Meaning: In feudal law, a fiefdom (also called a fief) was the central element of the feudal system. A monarch or overlord would grant a piece of land or a revenue-producing right to a vassal. In return, the vassal owed allegiance, taxes, and military service. These rights were typically heritable, allowing the vassal's family to maintain control over the territory for generations. [1, 2, 3, 4] The Feudal Hierarchy: Feudal lords were the landowners who granted fiefdoms to others, or who held land themselves directly from the king. The King: Owned all the land and granted huge territories to major lords.

Overlords: High-ranking nobles (dukes, counts, earls) who controlled large fiefdoms.

Vassals: Lesser lords/knights who received smaller pieces of land from overlords.

Serfs: Peasants who were legally tied to land & did the actual farming. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Roles & Responsibilities: A feudal lord held authority within his own territory. [1]

To the King: He had to provide knights, fight in wars, and pay taxes.

To his Vassals: He promised protection, justice, and the right to use the land.

To the Serfs: He demanded heavy taxes & labor in exchange for safety from invaders.
