it wouldn’t be alright . the rope burns on his wrists , the corpse of his brother floating among murky waters , the nightmares already often enough to call reoccurring— none of it was alright . all they had to pass between their palms were talks of summertime & hollow promises that tomorrow would be a new day . but how could they ever learn to separate tomorrow from the opera populaire , from the ghost , from the lifeless bodies lining their romance ?
saltwater had never been a stranger to raoul- hymns reciting great tales of brave naval officers had swam through his ears as a child , & sea-foam oft had licked at his ankles . he never feared drowning . except in this moment , one of the first moments he’s ever openly cried in front of her , he relearns the sting of the ocean , the salt soaking radiation out of his skin . everything feels so hollow .
their love was always trapped in those childhood stories , forever doomed to ricochet off of attic walls long torn-apart by time . there was no present , only the intoxicating memories of the past , a promise that someday things would get better . they always seemed to forget that what they were doing was imaging things they couldn’t do again , looking at a red trip-wire & calling it the horizon .
abruptly , he stands up & pulls away , aggressively running his arm over his eyes to banish the tears . he grabs his coat from the nearby stand & drapes his scarf over his neck , avoiding looking at christine . he knows that if he sees that face he’ll crumble , he’ll want to come crawling into her arms again , he’ll remember what it means to be a lover . most devastating of all- he’ll remember she’s hurting just the same as him .
