Life never ceases to blow my mind in ways I could have never imagined, especially now when I look back at events from the past that seemed unfortunate at the time. I have come to realize that certain events are a blessing in disguise. Some time ago, I was pre-occupied with all the disappointment in my life, I was obsessed with negative thoughts constantly plaguing my mind and turning me into someone I had despised. A friend had asked me to join our group on a trip interstate. As it turned out, she had to for go her flight due to unforseen circumstances. I was approached in part to accompany my other friend so that she wouldn't be alone in a foreign city. As I had found out the other day, my girlfriends had misjudged and booked to land at the wrong airport. Hence, these two hiccups had lead them to persuade me into joining them. At the time, I was not in the right mind frame to be travelling as I had been hell bent on fixing up my life, and I focused all my energy on that. It took a lot of convincing, and finally I figured, maybe I could use the time away to gather some much needed soul searching. I still remember the day we boarded our plane for the flight that changed my life. I sat with my dear friend, we casually chatted about our itinerary, and I spoke highly of my interstate friend and memories of good times and bittersweet farewells began to rush back. It pained me to see them leave but I was always happy for them. However, I remember being distracted by the negative thoughts in my mind and I felt no excitement. I simply was just not mentally prepared for the holiday. It felt like I was flowing with the motions and the only reason I was on that plane was simply because I was doing a favour for a friend. All this changed quickly when we landed. We were greeted with sweet smiles and warm hospitality. My friend joined us on a journey south to meet up with the rest of the group who flew in on different dates, including my girlfriend who had given me her ticket. We all had a blast and the rest is history. If situations hadn't played out the way they did, what with my travelling in place of my girlfriend, arriving at the wrong airport, and travelling with the right group of people, I wouldnt be where I am today, feeling grateful for all the love and generous support that I receive. The thought of travelling interstate was the last thing on my mind at time but such events had lead me to where I am today, and I truly believe home is where the heart is. I had let many things slip away in my life, or opportunities would roll by because I kept my eyes fixated on lost causes. It is a combination of oblivious randomness, gutsy decision making, a little friendly encouragement, luck and ultimately fate that has granted me this beautiful surprise of happiness in life. Today, I count down the days until the new year, I embrace my new life and is thankful for a wonderful year in both states with two families. Second chances don’t come easy in life so create those opportunities and seize them, let them take you to where you want to be, and let your spirit soar.
