Reformation Lesson 8 Don't try it alone! Luther plus #Melanchthon #Cranach #Walther #Senfl #KatharinavanBora http://www.jamesjanzen.com/blog (at Lutherhaus)
i finished copying out and transposing senfl’s missa lhomme arme a few days ago. yesterday i finished typing it out in finale, and then this morning i finished scanning out my whole notebook so i can send a copy of the whole thing to my friend for his birthday. so excite. i’d still like to do pipelare’s missa lhomme this summer, and maybe another missa lhomme arme i have that is attributed to mouton in the manuscript? i didn’t think he wrote a missa lhomme areme. HOW. NEAT.
i guess if anyone wants a copy of this whole thing, let me know and i can share the files with you through google drive?Â
thoughts on senfl’s missa lhomme arme
there’s a lot of neat anticipatory entrances with voices not carrying the cantus firmus. i think the main melody the soprano carries moves up in some sort of fashion throughout the mass ... possibly systematically by step? the tenor cantus firmus is frequently written in patterns that don’t align to the predominant meter or whatever ... despite being written with the same mensuration symbol as the other voices. the tenor only ever carries the cantus firmus and never any other material until the agnus dei where the soprano and tenor trade roles and music.Â
a lot of more traditional, more typical conventions of earlier masses, especially lhomme masses, are completely absent in this mass setting- like, there are no complex canons, no extended passages for reduced forces, no augmented forces at the end, ... no reworking of the cantus firmus etc.
que interesante.Â
i haven’t looked too deeply into senfl and where he was in history; i know he used techniques considered more archaic by his time. i think he also had a penchant for complex canons which is totally absent here. he also loved cantus firmus technique, which shows itself here.Â
chris learns how to read and write music update: i’ve copied out and rewritten the kyrie, gloria, and most of the agnus dei of senfl’s missa lhomme arme; i want to finish copying out and re-writing the credo, and sanctus/ benedictus by the end of the school year. i’ve copied out and re-written the kyrie, and some of the gloria of pipelare’s missa lhomme arme. very excite.
i’ve admittedly been using a guide to help me through senfl’s mass, but i’ve been going through the pipelare on my own; i gave up on using a guide and want this to be a goal that i finish once i better understand all the old mensural notation so i can make my own fresh transcription. i plan on getting through that one not too long after i finish my copy of the senfl mass. i’ve got OODLES of digital copies of manuscripts to copy out over summer break.Â
that’s all.Â

Ludwig Senfl   Carmine in Re and La
Guess what, it happened to me again: I found a particularly delicious recording (see above) and at second glance discovered the harmoniamundiusa logo on the cover.
