Hey, question (because I honestly love your portrayal of Tamora and want to know your thoughts) so I finally watched Sunday's teen wolf episode (werewolf in London) and I was wondering where you stand on Nolan and Gabe being scared of Tamora killing Nolan, He's not supernatural, and he's just a kid, do you think she'd actually kill him?
definitely not! i think that nolan and gabe have a very skewed idea of tamora’s motives, especially with them. and their skewed ideas are even skewed from each other, too. i know a lot of people are trying to understand this too, but what’s important to remember is that nolan and gabe have both made this idea up in their own heads —– it makes sense, given how hard she is on them and how large her expectations are for them, BUT SHE HAS NEVER THREATENED THEIR LIVES. she works with intimidation. in some ways, she does manipulate them —– she plays on their fears and amplifies them ( it’s a tactic that she’s a victim of, too, the way gerard takes what she’s scared of most and amplifies it, constantly feeding into her worries. )
what she sees in nolan and gabe, and all of the other hunters, is a bunch of people who are lost, scared, and feel like they’re completely out of control of their life. she wants people to feel like they belong somewhere; she wants people to keep building themselves up. because once they do that, once they finally feel like they have power, they’re ready to fight back. she’s definitely letting this power go to her head in some aspects, but this really isn’t about a power trip for her, which is one very big difference between her and gerard. yes, she is taking advantage of the power she has over people —- but there’s a very selfless reason she’s doing it. her main goal in all of this is TO PROTECT THE TOWN OF BEACON HILLS. she’s doing it in a very twisted way because the way she sees all of this is incredibly skewed, but that doesn’t change why she wants to accomplish these goals.
she looks at nolan and sees someone she can relate to. i’ve talked about this before and this is one of the most important things to note about tamora’s character, but her protectiveness over nolan is always present in everything she’s doing. she goes to very large extremes to protect him, and it’s not always the best way to go about it, but it’s important to him that he survives. nolan was the first person to bring up the beast to her —– and she knew she had been lied to by the police. she knew what attacked her was more than a bear. when nolan opened up to her about what he saw in the library, he validated what she saw; he made her feel ‘ less crazy ‘ as the police were making her out to feel. for that, she will always have more of a protective nature over him.
while she’s putting weapons in the hands of teenagers, teenagers who are untrained, it’s not about making them into ruthless killers. THIS IS NOT A GOOD PRACTICE, and that’s definitely clear by the way gabe had done something reckless on his own without any help from others —– but her goal isn’t to make this an unsafe place for people now that the citizens of beacon hills all have weapons. her goal is to give them a chance to protect themselves. she’s still convinced that the supernatural is ready to attack them at any given moment. she wants these kids to be able to protect themselves, because if they don’t have weapons and they don’t have an army behind them, she can’t be sure they’re going to be able to save their own lives.
she’s definitely using intimidation to convince them to stay on her side, but it’s not out of a malicious place. you may think so if you’re looking at it from scott’s pack’s defense, but for her, she still thinks she’s doing the right thing. it’s important to her that they don’t falter or start to wonder if they’re on the wrong side; she wants them to feel like they have to be on their side or they’ll die. SHE won’t kill them, but she worries that if they’re not on her side, she’ll have no way to protect them, and ultimately, they won’t survive. like i said, she has a very twisted sense of protection, but she wants these kids to live. it’s the most important thing to her; it’s the very reason she’s so hard on them —- because she wants them to believe that they don’t have another option. if they start to feel like they’re on the wrong side, they’ll get themselves killed.
she and gerard do not have the same morals or motives. he doesn’t care if these kids lose their lives, but tamora does ( she was disgusted when gerard insisted it didn’t matter if nolan lost his life; she didn’t want him out there on his own. ) the only way she would kill them is if they became supernatural too —– because at that point, she would have already believed she lost them. she isn’t convinced that supernatural creatures have any humanity left; she thinks they lost it whenever they turned into a creature; she believes that THEY DIED the moment they became supernatural creatures, and that they need to be put out of their misery as soon as they become one ( as noted in the scene with edgar. ) while protecting these kids is important, especially nolan, she has already lost the battle if they become supernatural creatures, and at that point, she doesn’t believe they’re human anymore —– so yes, i absolutely see her wanting to kill them then. i’d love to see her get clarity on the matter BEFORE that though, because i think she’s still waiting to see the other half of the story that she’s missing, and that will hopefully lead her onto a better path ( and most definitely leave her with an extreme amount of guilt for trying to destroy so many lives that she wasn’t aware were REAL, not just lost lives with no humanity. )
i think it’s interesting as heck that nolan and gabe are so sure their lives are at stake going up against her. she wants them to think there are consequences to everything they do, because she knows it motivates them. that’s obvious with gabe; he was willing to try to kill all those people if it meant saving nolan’s life by proving to tamora they were strong enough to handle this. the way they’re all reacting to the supernatural, to each other, to monroe —– it’s really interesting to watch, and even more interesting to know that their ideas are so skewed from one another’s, which is why i find the hunter’s army to be some of the most intriguing characters this show has ever seen.
also, thank you so much!!! i appreciate that so much. this is something i’ve been wanting to write about, so thanks for asking!!!
