If he were a vampire, this would be the beginning of the end. Nicholas steps in.Β
The half-bistro, half-cafe is quiet now, improbably enchanted with a spell that absorbs the rush hour roar. The lights are melted butter. These are natural woods. Nicholas is canopied by a ceiling of netted lush plants that propel him into fantasies of a witch-herbalistβs medicinal hut, a familiar corner of his brain hatching ideas of a cauldron foaming in the back. βIβm told there was a home here, and a woman who lost her son in a fire.β He pulls back a chair. He sets his briefcase down beside it. βShe wanted to return him to her as Elijah, and she didβonly without his body,β he says. βAnd so she searches for a new host every year, that her son may have it for his own.β
This is far-flung, a story told by superstitious widows or schoolchildren playing hookie. Nicholas heard it from a parishioner.
