hey i love your horikoshi sketch edits a fuckton, the linework especially. how did you manage to make it so clean and dark? it gives the whole thing a really polished look that i love, so i was curious
I’m sorry! I thought that I’d answered this, but tumblr saved it as a draft. Thank you for asking!
I use photoshop cc for my digital line work. Brush setting as 3 px initially, and 100% hardness. I load the sketch in and scale it to about 300% size, lower the opacity as low as I can to get a read on what details are important, and then start inking slowly on a new layer. I do my stuff rasterized, which is honestly not great, but I never forced myself to learn how to use vector software with the same familiarity.
It takes a very long time, since i purposely do it slowly and only on my down time, but its meditative for me. I like working with sketches that aren’t super duper clean, because then the inking doesn’t add as much to the clarity or character of the sketch.
I know that’s all a little vague! I’ve had people ask about my linework before, and I know that they’re mostly asking about photoshop inking techniques, which I’ve internalized so much that I don’t really consciously know what I’m doing. Hopefully I’ll get a screencast program soon so that I can just record my nonsense and maybe that will help.
