Rules to remember when starting a new job, venture, education, etc.
Sometimes there are ways to skip steps. Find out if it's possible and if it is, do it. You never know. You might think the path from point A to point B is 5 years but sometimes there are ways to skip steps. Im university there were many times that I could have tested out of a class and skipped that class, since I already knew the material, but at the time I didn't know that. In life, there are many times when there are shortcuts or opportunities to skip ahead.
Network. Connections are important, or at the very least can be useful. You never know who will help you when you need it. Or if you're searching for a job, and someone you met happens to have an opening. Meet people, stay in contact, emphasize what you have in common, offer to help them in some way.
Establish a good reputation, make good first impressions, stay out of other people's power games, fights, drama. Don't participate or take sides. Avoid getting mixed in with other people's issues. A good reputation is the ultimate asset that will benefit you in every area of your life. Take it seriously, and make a point of having a good one.
If there is something you want to keep secret, up smokescreens in advance. If you leave a big glaring unknown, or avoid questions, people will notice. People will wonder. They will come up with their own stories. If there is something you do every Saturday but you don't want anyone to know what, come up with a smokescreen for the case that they notice that you are never available on Saturdays. If you just avoid the topic, they will wonder and come up with their own guesses and predictions. Don't let them. Swoop in, give a believable smokescreen, have it well rehearsed. Make sure the smokescreen is always the same, no matter who asks. Be consistent.
