They were bitten by the spider when working on genetic research with their parents (who are also scientists.) It sent them into a coma for 3 days, but weren't killed due to their portal abilities (they emit small amounts of radiation) + the quick administration of the anti-venom (as Katipō are poisonous, although we haven't had anyone die since 1901).
(This isn't particularly relevant to the above point, but their dad was also a superhero - the portals were passed down from him - and found out about their powers first. Also, their webs are organic, but they have gloves to control the portals.)
Their portals are a pain in Miguel's ass (and that's putting it simply.) They are essentially a walking anomaly (he's arrested/imprisoned them multiple times -- enough for them to keep count).
