helpful hint for anyone who needs to select a section of text in a doc of some sort:
put your cursor where you want to start the selection, then scroll down (without holding) to where you want to end the selection. hold down “shift” and click. it selects the portion of text from where you started and ended
you can also use “shift” plus arrow keys to select or adjust the already selected text
hope this helps

Selection exercise continued…
One can also add a pattern to the image. Start by dragging a black and white pattern image (in this case obviously a round one!) onto the image you want to use it with (1st image). Change the Blending Mode to Multiply to have the white disappear and the black pattern left on its own. Then click Edit > Transform > Scale and resize it to fit the image how you want it to (2nd image). Click Select > Load Selection and it should be your previously saved selection in the channel in the pop up box, and click OK (3rd image). Finally click Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection and the pattern will appear only between your two previous selections and be hidden in the rest of the image (4th image).

In this exercise I was trying to make a selection of the white part of the tyre.
1. Make a selection for the outer edge
2. The selection can be adjusted with Transform Selection
3. The edges can be refined with Select and Mask (smooth 0.5 to 1 pixel)
4. Save selection as a new channel. It will appear in Channels as an alfa channel.
5. Back to Layers. Deselect everything and and Load Selection.
At this point we have the first selection loaded in layers.
1 Make the second selection for the inner edge.
2. Save the selection in the same channel with Subtract mode.
3 Layers - Layers Mask - Reveal selection.
Now we have the selection of the white part of the tyre as in picture.
