Adam: “I’ve always been drawn to books with a strong sense of place. Gwendolyn Brooks is a writer and poet who grew up in Bronzeville which is where the Black Renaissance happened in the 1940s in Chicago. She writes about living there, which really was a study in contrast. There were amazing theaters and music halls, but also a lot of poverty and people living in chopped up kitchenette buildings. This book really opened up the South Side for me and led me to read a dozen of other books about Chicago. I usually have to read ten books about a place before I go visit it. That’s true for my own city, too. It’s weird to me that some people aren’t curious to know about the million things that happened before they got there.” @adamm0rgan #GwendolynBrooks #SelectedPoems / @theubc for #subwaybookreview #chicago 🌬 (at El Train)
